http://soundcloud.com/djeer/wip << What are peoples opinion on this thus far? I had an evening cover shift at work and managed to knock that out. The bass note at the end is fluffed and needs to change, but just as an intro - thoughts?

I'm trying to do what you said dude.Turnipish Thoughts wrote:@ eye-sic
External destiny is wicked man you need to extend this out in to a tune. If I could give crit it would be the lack of variation in your elements, try finding a counter motif to the original melody you've got and drop it in where appropriate (I hate saying that but you know what I mean)
I like the Dynamic range in Mystic and the Bass/Shot/Melody call and response you got goin on in there is wicked. Also all your sound design/mixing on the different clips is top notch. Keep it up!
@Houston Weather
It feels like something is a little lack luster in this track. IT's got groove but I think the synths/samples you're using for the hook elements are a little thin, re: freqs/width. Try playing with Chorus/Flange/Auto Panning? to widen stuff up and add a bit more variation. You've got a good grasp of arrangement though I think you should spend a little more time on sound selection/design. A general rule of thumb is "do not settle for a sound until it's the absolute perfect sound for that element". Don't be afraid to try weird stuff either. Good track though keep it up!
@Hashkey
Immediately I felt like the track was lacking a lot of top end which makes it feel very removed. I think the I'm addicted sample would sound pretty sick if it was heavily over compressed and squashed up in your face with some soft saturation to bring out the sibilance a little. Make it feel more immediate. Plus the Kick could do with layering a short hat over the top of it, compressed in to it to give it some click/snap in the tops, It's a pretty dull/thudy kick and when the tune drops nothing really opens up in the higher register to make the tune feel like it's closing ground on you. It's ok to actually fully exploit the upper register to make a tune feel much closer and higher fidelity. Filthzilla makes great use of this technique. Pay attention to the upper register; all the washyness of the hats, the snap/smush of the kick/snare/crash and the sharp leads/pads e.t.c. It's all used to add immediateness to a tune, that without will sound thudy and sort of unclear.
Ok. Me. I've been away from producing for a while and thrown this together over the last two days. It's using a weird key change from C minor to A minor at the end of each bar, the keychange sounds pretty slick imo and I want to try exploit it. All the elements are there but I'd like some ideas on where to take it, at the moment it's just a bit of an intro I'm not too happy with and an 8 bar loop repeated. Ideas on sub/lead/motif/general arrangement would be greatI'm not particularly fond of the sub either and Sound Cloud seems to have done some weird squashy compression which has made it all sound a little less sharp but hey, it's a wip.
Soundcloud
But hey filthzilla puts his hats on antiphase :/ is it that a right thing to do?
Sometimes to get that wide effect stuff goes on antiphase and I heard is not good to go on antiphase. Any toughts on that?

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
it sucks when the whole board getss backed up. there are people who posted feedback and are waiting for some critical thinking on their tuness, when you jump in front of those people without leaving feedback, they get moved down the list and makes it even less likely for them to get feedback. just follow the rules, they are there to keep thingss running smoothly here.

Just to get this thread back on track. I was the most recent person to post three bits of feedback and leave a WIP for feedback. If anyone's wondering where it is it's on the previous page back yonder in the fabled days before ye' epic derail...

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
I couldn't find anything interesting to say on the lastests wips so i digged a bit into the pages, i hope the guys quoted will be able to see this.
@Echoi
I didn't really like the sound design of that synth, maybe too experimental to me, i found it a bit weird and flat. Plus the progression in notes seem off (like in the drum part at the beginning). I don't know much about music theory, but that's how it felt when I listened to your wip.
On the other hand, the drum work is really nice. Snares are maybe a little bit too high when they "roll".
@Hashkey, "addicted wip" :
I really liked the wip overall. The intro may not bring enough tension. I really liked the synchopated groove of that track. It's deep and feels 70, and got me headbang slowly but powerfully if you know what i mean ahahaha. About the vocals, i'd say they are maybe a bit too present, not subtle enough. Once we know she's addicted, i don't think there is a need that it's that clear in the mix, maybe the vocal should step down to let the rest express itself sometimes in the track.
Btw i'm jealous of your kick. Pretty punchy.
@Pain table
I liked the intro. It sounds very "far" though, maybe too much reverb ? I like the kind of unexpected attacks of the sub.
I'd say the midrange "bass" at the drop is not subby enough. And i'm not really found of your drum pattern, 4 on the floor lacks what makes the bass music we listen to interesting and different. Maybe you can use it on some part to accelerate, but to me it removes the "balancer" part of that genre.
My wip :
Vocals (rapping probably) will be added on the drum part of the intro, and probably in the breakdown aswell. That's also why there's a gap at one point in the wip.
I hope that the vocals will be able to bring tension, so that the drop is more expected and less sudden than it is now, because it may sound surprising.

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@ Turnipishthoughts: like the midrange stuff a lot but needs eqing to boost its presence in the mix. The chords and keyboard bits make good use of delay and reverbs, I liked that
-The bassline hits some nice higher frequencies, sub bass and lower freqs could be more powerful and felt more
-I really like the dub feel to the tune but the snare seems too aggressive for this vibe, would be worth trying something with some more reverb and a softer attack in my opinion
@houston weather:
- Intro chords are really nice!
- Kick sounds too hollow, needs more low end to back up the punchy mid sound
- bassline needs more low end/sub in parts, some parts it seems powerful other parts its barely even noticable
- -little bongo section is a real pleasant subtle feature
-the mid range is really cool man, those synth chords are mesmerising and have a very ambient feel to them- Don't fuck with them haha
@eye-sic: hats in intro need more high freqs boosting to cut through
kick needs more low end, try boosting around the 70-80hz
lots of interesting mid range , nicely filled out
snare is powerful and really nicely eq'd.
lower end seems very sparse, u need more bass
FOR EVERYONE: Not sure how many of you have seen this but found it recently and have found it really useful (especially with my generic comments like 'boost mids on the snare etc etc.) -This should help clear it up, I consider myself underqualified to talk too specifically about some things so that should help:
