Where did the idea come from though? I think it's just a religious tradition.
If it reduces the risk of infections that much, there would be people doing it here too I think.

Anyway my uncle is a urologist, I'll just ask him.

yeah its started in egypt, and has filtered through abrahamic religions. i think it definitely lowered the risk of infection years ago, as well as lowers the chances of HIV transmission now a days, but aside from that i dont think it really matters too muc now.
