Sampling from youtube and other sources

So simple question really, i find youtube the easiest place to find samples (usually vocs) but what about the sound quality, would you steer clear? I know some might say, listen to it, if it sounds shit dont use it but for some reason i cant hear it in my own tracks....I found a fantastic barry white interview the other day, great 1 liners i could chop yet im worried about the quality.

One of my biggest hold backs in production is the lack of good quality sources to get the samples from, if youtube is not recommended can you recommend me some please

use it if its all you can find. i've used them before. with proper eq, fx and sitting right in the mix you cant really tell.

ok thanks, so this may sound like a dumb question but if ya dont know ya dont know, some vids are of a lesser quality than others ok, some no more than 240p some up to 1080 or whatever number it it, is it really only the 1080 ones im looking for ideally, and like i said, how do i get that audio in the best quality i can find?

I know I probably sound like a total troglodyte...but to me there still is nothing like an analog sample...from vhs, cassette or vinyl. I regularly sample from all these sources. With vinyl there is a somewhat steep initial investment I spent about 200 total on a TT and a new cartridge/needle. You can get a vhs or cassette player dirt cheap at second hand store. All the media for this things are dirt cheap too.

Failing that you can get 1.00 CDs. Get away from the freakin' internet and computer man...

i've had vinyl releases that had vocal bits sampled from youtube. audio quality won't hold you back.

Mike Paradinas from Mu did a great interview about his juke comp-- apparently most of those tunes were never bounced at full-res, they only existed as mp3s and the session files were lost. some were cut to vinyl from mp3's, and i'm pretty sure at least one was ripped straight from youtube.

in short, don't let it hold you back. but do get your paperwork right if it sees a release...

How would one record their computer output to a cassette tape?

Many cassette decks have RCA I/Os...so all you need is is male/male RCA to 1/4inch cables. EDIT: Assuming you have an interface that has 1/4 I/Os.

EDIT: depending on the deck you may get some machine noise in the recording though, just FYI

so just so i get this right, interface to tape deck, tape deck records cassette on cd, cd back into comp? or is there a faster way?

Oh, yea man...skip the CD...bounce to cassette via your audio interface...then play the cassette back in through your interface. That's assuming you have both audio Ins and Outs on your interface.

Seriously, dont give a fuck about audio quality. like obviosuly there is different between a good and a bad mix, how things are levelled and spaced out in the mix, stereo content and depth. but like most of the shit i like these days if rough as fuck, and if you had some 96kbps sample in there, you wouldnt be able to tell. Now this is different to listening to just a straight up 96kbps track, that will sound like shit. dont make an entire track out of shit samples. but like 1 or 2 wont make a different. I end up making everything sound shitter quality anyway.

For bonus points do Lee Scratch Perry and record some shit to tape and then bury it in the yard for a while...or let the cassette lay in a hot car for an hour at a time until you get some mad tape warble.

Also...look into to endless loop cassettes...there are directions to make your own on the net. I've not toyed with this yet, but it's on the list.

used tape is better...if you are recording stems don't be afraid to record hot/in the red. Then layer that w the dry signal and squeeze a lil w compressor

Cos it doesnt just cut the top of the wave off, it just smudges it real nice

That's what i'm using atm, decent for recording whatever, going to need more i/o soon tho but that's only when I give in to my urge to buy some outboard efx not just synths!
