If you say 'dubstep is just music,' then is music to you just dubstep?
Learning Genre definition and what comprises and lies behind the hall marks of genres can be an amazing tool in speeding up your understanding of the underlying ingredients of music in general. You know, what makes good music (to you), Good music. The point being not to restrict yourself to genre definition but to be aware of an explore the specific fundamentals of different areas of sound enjoyment. This would also imply broadening your tastes in music and sound design, listening to things you wouldn't normally under a critical eye, film scores, sound designers, Classical, Jazz, obscure and unique stuff. Also finding a few role models within the world of sound outside of the traditional producer label, Hanz Zimmer, Diago Stoko, Durk Kooistra, Carmine Coppola, Walter Murch e.t.c. I feel that this is one of the most important aspects of developing a keen ear and love for sound. Getting yourself into the headspace of these people, find documentaries, interviews e.t.c. of your role models and take in their perspectives on what makes music and sound design so infinitely appealing, nothing inspires and drives you more.
Genre definition is important, it's the sort of higher iteration detail underlying the meta-theory of traditional musical practice (Scale, tonality, progression, melody, harmony e.t.c.). So yes, it would be within the interest of a musical mind to realize that and take to use it as a tool of development.
Very sorry I didn't read any of this until now. God, it appears I've been a massive knob all this time. So what you're say is to try and "broaden my musical definitions" so I can figure out the "how" before the "why" (or vice versa...)

OP, why not ask a specific question? It's like wondering about how to get good at judo. Nobody's going to give you a response which will enable you to become good at it all of a sudden. Like with any music, most of us spend years on it before we get any good. Some people are quicker, but in all likelihood it'll take you more than a few months. Are you willing to give that a try?

I truly would give the whole "music" thing a try if I could just stay interested long enough! I have gleaned a few things from you guys, though:Praxisaxis wrote:OP, why not ask a specific question? 1.)If you want to be good at making music - any kind of music - learn your DAW. Mastering would be the best, but sufficiently learning it is good.
2.)Ask questions! Don't ask vague questions (How can I make dubstep on a computer???) it will only lead to anger and probably the OP freaking out and posting a "rant" that sounds really whiny and retarded. You really should ask specific questions ONLY if you've used the search function and the answer isn't there. Again, asking a question without looking to see if anyone asked it before will result in everyone instantly hating you.
3.)Practice, Practice, Practice! You know the old saying, "Practice makes perfect!"
4.)Learn your DAW!
5.)Practice!
6.)If at all possible, (some people may not have the time or money for this.) learn music theory. It will help a lot in transferring what's in your head to the piano, guitar, paper, computer, etc.
7.)Don't come onto any forums and expect everyone to do the work for you. Also, if you come off sounding like a whiny bitch, no-one will ever take you seriously. They'll be all, "Hey, look! It's that whiny VolumesofPotatoes! Let's completely skip his thread because he's a whiny bitch who expects everyone to do the work for him!"
I'll add more as I re-read the thread.

You'll get it pretty much anywhere dude. Although it's interesting how much shit gets tossed around in skrillex related threads.Hircine wrote:why is it so easy to troll the production forum?

that's why we have a growl thread, so all the 13 yo star producers can stroke their cocks and discuss who has the best skrillex growl instead of sharing production ideas.Sure_Fire wrote:You'll get it pretty much anywhere dude. Well we got it back on track for the time being, actual logical discussion and info sharing happening atm. Weird right?Hircine wrote:that's why we have a growl thread, so all the 13 yo star producers can stroke their cocks and discuss who has the best skrillex growl instead of sharing production ideas.Sure_Fire wrote:You'll get it pretty much anywhere dude.
