In regards to layering foley with growls, I see no problem - I know quite a few artists who've said they do...

Okay so this guy has the craziest vocal bass in town, I've been experimenting to recreate it and I'm in the right ball park, but I'd like to narrow things down more.
I'm using massive and experimenting with other effect plugins.

Here's his track The effect I'm talking comes in at 1:30

Here's one of my synth experiments...

Thank's for any light you can shed!
Cheers!

Yeah man that would be sick. If you could just give me the rough idea behind them (oscilators, filters distortion, effects etc.), I like toying around with things rather than actually building them to excactly like they are from in depth tutes and what not (been like that since my lego days :cornlol: )
From another thread where I posted:
There's 3 different basses in the main "verse".

All are reese-based.
>The first (at the drop) is a simple reese that was resampled in Harmor (see SeamlessR's tuts on YouTube) just to give it that phasy sound - basic stuff. I then used Kontakt to play the samples and used Kontakts phaser (this is what makes the talky sound. I think I used the screaming phaser preset). This is then routed to a mixer channel with Noveltech Character and iZotope Trash adding some grit.
>The second (plays a little riff between sections of the first bass) is more of a fat saw than a reese again it was resampled in Harmor (see SeamlessR's tuts on YouTube) to give it that phasy sound and again I used Kontakt to play the samples and used Kontakts phaser effect. This is then routed to a mixer channel with Noveltech Character and iZotope Trash with similar settings - I did try WOW on this but the formants actually ruined it.
>The third (more different than the others) is a Massive patch based on SAW I and SAW II with Deep Throat (set to bend +/-). The LFO then alters the WT-Pos of the Deep Throat wave pretty much from 0 to 100 and also alters a Bandreject filter. I also used Massives phaser on this and the sine shaper. This wasn't resampled - although I've now ended up resampling it for a more juicy sound. Now I can't exactly remember what effects I had on this because I've now changed them but I think it was just a very, very light bitcrusher and Noveltech Character - no distortion, the Massive patch was gritty enough.

Now if I'm honest all the patches are really simple, I've done no frequency splitting and I've done no EQ automation. But it sounds quite good to me atm.

To improve the sound each one is layered with an analogue sub patch and a saw bass. Both of these are EQ'd to sit under the reeses so from low to high: SUB¦SAW¦REESE.

The saws and reeses are bussed together with a comp to glue them.

That's about it, obviously there's other stuff (pads and swooshy noises that help fill stuff out).

Want any more details?

Okay, I take that stuff about the sampling back. Just watched that granulizing tut someone posted, that stuff is pretty amazing. Sounds a lot better than I thought, really cool. What a bitch to automate in conjunction with the main growl though...

It's not to hard if you do it with a midi controller then record the automations. Also FL's pretty good for automating stuff quickly and easily.

I'd post and image of the massive preset for most of my better growls but I have no idea how to do that.

Anyone else like having a bitcrusher after a low pass filter?

The print screen key posts a snapshot of your desktop to the clipboard, from there you can bast it into pain or something similar, there's also a hotkey that just takes and saves your screen shot but I can't remember what it is

Yeah, I use FL and automate a lot, was thinking more getting the automation of the foley to match the phrasing or whatever for the automation on the bass. When you have 15 parameters being automated it gets a bit chaotic, not a big fan of twiddling knobs at random. Usually try to make some sort of phrasing, can be a bit anal about that haha.

Maybe before, so it gets rid of the extra noise from the bitcrusher. I prefer camelphat to a bitcrusher though.

I can do that, I just don't know how to post it.

tried macro'ing things? you can link anything to an automation clip in FL.

Yeah, played a bit with it a couple days ago. Like the last part, first part is ok.

Very much trial and error though, hard to make a good sound with it whenever you want

Yeah, doesn't really do it for me. I want all the automations to act together to sort of form vowels or certain sounds or whatever, not just follow the same curve. Just because they're automated together doesn't mean that it'll sound good. Like, I may want a bandreject going back and forth and then an EQ band sweep upwards to form a certain vowel, to make a certain phrase. For that it won't work to automate them both with the same macro, I want it more precise. Sometimes I map a couple of them together but usually I automate everything separately, and in way too much detail.

I'm a bit aspergery with my dubstep. Electro is a lot easier for me haha :corntard:

I want to see ableton live with fl studio's playlist/sequencer.

Ableton's one sucks hard. The automation is just bitch.
I miss things like instrument rack and macros in fl studio... I hope they add shit like this in newer versions.

You can get a talking effect after. You will need and EQ or filter after the bitcrusher though, yeah.

I'm the same dude, I make all my basses in a seperate file so it's ok for things to get cluttered. I'll have like 5 or 6 automation clips doing different things, with some mapped to the same one and some just on their own.

Here's that massive patch:

Image

that's the basic dealio. Not much happening in the FM mod u can't see, just make sure it's on osc 3. Have to play with the freq. shifter and get exact to make it sound awesome. The Voicing is mono with 4 voices.

Here’s the FX chain, WOW filter is inbetween A/E on BR mode with about 60% resonance. Env. Follower isn’t on. The cutoff from both HP and LP filters are linked to the same macro (X-Y controller X). The 'Main' macro from Massive is also linked to X. I'll usually have a post EQ aswell before it goes off for resampling/layering etc.

Someone needs to make a DAW with all the best stuff from all of them. Ableton's live capabilties, FL's playlist/piano roll and automation, Reason style racks and pro tools style recording.
