Lukid (Luke Blair), like his label boss and sometime production partner Actress, doesn’t limit himself to one style. Instead he prefers to open up the cages and let techno, hip hop, bass and electro crawl all over each other. As methods go it can be messy, but it also throws up some interesting hybrids.

Imagine a mini keyboard on the couch, talking about his feelings…Lukid would be the one sat on the chair, clipboard handy, asking the probing questions. Coaxing the soul out of the machines is the name of this London-based producer’s game, creating hypnotic head-nod soundscapes in the process. Last year saw him drop an LP and an EP on London-based indie label Werk Discs, full of emotive abstract electronic beats, as well as contributing to the We Are… monthly podcasts.

Something is troubling Lukid. Where once the producer specialised in house textures tainted with sadness, now only flecks of melancholia remain. Allowing urban surroundings to filter through his sub-conscious, ‘Lonely At The Top’ is expert aural psycho-geography. A survey of pain and redemption, the album’s cathartic themes are matched to Lukid’s painterly brush strokes and typically beautiful use of layered sound. Ending with the hopeful, glowing house tones of ‘Talk To Strangers’ the revolving themes unpick themselves slowly, leaving a lasting, lingering effect. A step forward in terms of production and vision, but no doubt at quite a personal cost to Lukid.

Let us present to you a record called This Dog Can Swim, the first single from Lukid’s album Lonely At The Top, and a 12” that is sure to become a landmark statement in the burgeoning Dog genre.

The A side belongs to Lukid, on which he presents us with two uniquely haunting snapshots of canine life. The title track is a fierce one; Lukid pairs the splashiest snare ever recorded with a disconcertingly icy synth to create three and a half minutes of rabid music sure to get your favourite tail-wagger all worked up into a fury. Where the opening track is bloodthirsty and feral, the 2nd is a more domesticated affair, with Lukid using the same dog-sounds to create a new dog-mood. Paying tribute to man’s best friends' more affectionate side, "This Dog Can Run" twists the icy synths into twinkly melody, then buries it under a layer of fog and detritus to create a warmer (if still unnerving) portrait of a hound.

The B side belongs to the remixers. First up is 1991, an elusive young Swede who came to our attention after using his allotted bi-monthly hour of internet time to upload some incredibly timeless gems to his soundcloud page. The 2nd remix comes from Mass Prod, a Genoan lad whose hobbies include techno and satan. Both producers provide abstract and spiralling meditations on Lukid’s mongrel, creating the perfect footnote to this whole barbarous affair.

We don’t know the name or whereabouts of the dog that Lukid is chronicling on this vinyl record, but we surely do not envy its owner. This dog can bite.
