i can't view this, blocked in my region. However at a guess: detuned saw waves w/ distortion and large reverb playing arpegiation/chords.

That's not a pluck. Any youtube tutorial on Skrillex or Alvin Risk laser sounds will get you there.

I'm trying to figure out what Emalkay did to make his sub bass so sick in 'Fabrication'. :4:

Tried to recreate it myself, with two detuned sin-square waves, fiddlin' with the wavetable positions a bit in Massive, a 24 lowpass and a bit of tube. Didn't even come close. Anyone got any ideas? What I like about it, is the movement, the fast changing notes without losing power, the clarity and the presence of the sub (some parts of the song, it is almost a lead , i.e. at 2:18)

Cheers,
John

Ghetto squee sound?

Post by BYTEME » Sun Nov 04, 2012 6:05 pm

How would you do a "squee" lead sound..?
I hear it in some ghetto ish brostep and dubstep.

Multiple examples:

Bassnectar: What (Ft. jantsen) (It's the drop.)
Doctor P: Sweet Shop (Again, the drop)
Eptic uses it a lot but with different sounds a bit..
Foreign Beggars: No Holds Barred (but as the background sound)

So how di they do it? It doesn't sound like layered saw waves. It sounds like a really thick as fu** formant or square with a sub bass under it.

Please no judgments, just give me some advice on how to make that sound. I'm really curious and it would really help a lot with my progression in producing.
Keep progressing, one day you'll be great. :)

Try adding saturation and/or distortion then lowpassing again. Also try stuttering your notes?

Thx mthrfnk. Tried again, not in Massive, but in operator (Ableton). Got slightly beter results, also thanks to your info. Problem is always that if I lowpass it, it tends to lose presence. All the notes from Emalkays sub are hitting between 43 and 80 khz, have almost no higher harmonics, but still sound a bit airy and bright.

I assume a lot of that boils down to proper mastering, but I feel there are a few essential tricks missing in my toolbox

They're just staccato stabs, potentially played as chords.

Can you replicate the sound? I already tried what you suggested and did not work for me.

Are you using staccato samples or just reguar string samples?

Staccato from NI Session Strings. Actually while those disco strings in the song seem to be a sampled intrument and even got string falls that as far is i know is not possible to reproduce with a synth i'm getting better results with a Korg Mono/Poly. If you play the sampled instrument over the song, you notice that the the strings in the song don't have the dynamics of the real thing.

I'm also considering that it may have a layer of brass.(?)

Well, those strings are very peculiar to me. I'm having a hard time trying to reproduce it.

What part of the drums?

As a rule of thumb, don't expect to find instantly good hits, instead search to make good things out of trash.
Do you say zerbaman? Or do you say zebraman?

try making a really low end heavy reese in FM8, then use both a highpass and a lowpass filter.

that should get you pretty close.

It is transpose/pitch, you can start with kick drum preset, maybe change the osc wavw, trnaspose and start working around it.
