E-MU sampler questions ?

Post by billybuxton » Fri Nov 09, 2012 8:30 am

Yo
I'm thinking of picking up an E-MU E5000 Ultra but iv got a few questions...

How do you get sound to and from the E-MU ? :dunce:

Image

I read online that you need a cable going from the main R & L output to the input on an audio interface, and a midi cable from the audio interface to the midi inputs on the E-MU

Does this sound about right ?

Yes. It records a sample. You play it back via MIDI ...

I have a Focusrite Saffire 6, and I have a pair of the outs running in to the E-MU. I also have a stereo line mixer that goes to the audio input on the Saffire 6; the mixer has all the E-MU outputs running in to it, my DJ mixer, and a few extra channels in case I get any other synths. If I want to record in to the E-MU, I just have to arm the record/sample function on it. If I want to record the output of the E-MU, I just hit record in my DAW (Logic).

I also have a SCSI Zip drive connected to the E-MU (has to be the 100 gig model), and a CD-ROM. I then have a USB Zip drive that I can connect to my computer; that model doesn't matter, but just make sure you are using 100 gig Zip discs if you do this. Also, you have to be using EOS 4.7 on the E-MU (maybe 4.6 works too?), and you format the discs to FAT format, and then I can transfer .wav and .aif files back and forth between the E-MU and the computer. But really, most people will want to record in and record out. I mainly just transfer on to the E-MU to build up sample banks on the internal hard drive. Since you have a E5000, you should be able to run EOS 4.7 on it.

Not exactly the greatest set-up, but it's functional enough for me right now.

Have fun with the E-MU!

This thread reminded me of buying this e64 (not a ultra, has a hd though) that's rotting in a local store.

How much?

I've thought about buying a 6400 Classic, to see how it compares to the relatively stock 6400 Ultra I have. Got the Ultra for $200 U.S. off of a friend (with about 20 E-MU sample CDs), and there is a local guy selling a Classic for $200.

No chance of haggling or driving down the price?
