People talk about WW2 as if it is some isolated case of Good versus evil but they forget that without WW1- ie. one of the stupidest and most meaninglessly catastrophic wars ever, there would be no WW2.

Some guy from the guardian wrote:Lest We Forget actually means precisely that we should forget about the causes of conflict – which are always apparently far too complex for mere mortals to fathom – and about the inter-imperialist rivalry which saw those lads taken from the countryside and towns across Europe and used as expendable cannon fodder against each other; about the fact that we still send those same working-class lads from unemployment black spots off to fight in unwinnable and even illegal wars in the interests of the rich and powerful. The parade of warmongering politicians in their Sunday best bowing their heads in prayer and wearing their poppies with pride this weekend should be enough to politicise anyone, I would have thought.
Remembrance Sunday should be just that, remembering those that have been lost with fondness, not a day celebrating the militarisation and honour of the armed forces, those which only 5 years after the end of WW2 were setting up concentration camps in Kenya.

Yeah, this is a Brits only thread! WTF, get out of here you non Britishers.

Funny how it's so easy to point fingers and justify war when you ignore your own crimes. Colonialism and wars gave you this comfortable life you have now. Pay some respect and be glad that you don't have to live in all those countries you parasitated on. And I'm far from having a "clean past", Brazil and Argentina, funded by Britain, murdered the most part of Paraguay's male population just because they were becoming a threat to the Empire, that's a fact. I don't take any pride on that and I don't think I should honour the leaders or the generations that did it, they achieved nothing. War is a crime and those celebrations are only propaganda to justify it.

I'm out, going to college and face some real problems. And I won't ever bother replying to your offense, you are blinded by patriotic propaganda and you can say the same about me I guess, this argument won't take us nowhere and won't prove nothing, just like wars.
Our remembrance day is not a celebration and noone is trying to justify war or say that it's ok

UNDERSTAND THAT please. Not only that, but I didn't actually 'parasite' on the countries you are talking about, so fuck off. South America has it's own darkness to worry about, so why don't you have a look at yourself first before wading in to something your un-educated about.

All you chumps going off on one about glorified military and corrupt governments can just shut the fuck up. By attempting to show off your flawed and ridiculous opinions, you are insulting the point of this day. It isn't to discuss conspiracy theories about governments or say which nation 'is allowed' to mourn the dead, it's about respecting people. That's it. Stop blowing shit up and trying to impress yourselves and just accept that today is about honouring the dead, no matter what side they were on and how they died

Telling people who think that rememberance day is full of shit to stop talking about it is like fundamentalist muslims telling non-muslims to stop painting pictures of Muhammed.

History has a way of repeating itself, just hope some in here will REMEMBER this then :). I'm out, even discussing the point of this is retarded to say the least.

i'm really sorry if this offends anyone or if i sound like a socialist or whatever, but as someone pointed out already, WW2 is a direct consequence of WW1 which, for anyone who knows a bit of history, is in turn the archetypal war caused by unhealthy bouts of nationalism (the irony being half of the nations involved didnt even actually exist one century prior to WW1)

not saying what that skating fairy guy did was right or anything (and as someone else pointed out it's not even clear whether he was really making a statement or just happened to be there at the wrong moment), but saying he diserved to be beat up for that is EXACTLY the kind of unhealthy nationalism that led to WW1, just hope some in here will REMEMBER this then :)

Does anyone who genuinely partakes in the point of Remembrance Day (i.e. Remembering their fallen loved ones and friends) actually give two hoots about state propaganda and how the state is sponsoring the events? Probably not. They're just there to remember the people they've lost and to pay tribute to them.

Seems a bit rude to ridicule them at this particular event doesn't it? Regardless of whether it's an attention-seeking stunt, or to spread his own anti-war notions?

Also find it somewhat saddening that this Remembrance occasion is being used here as an opportunity to espouse anti-war notions against the evil of the State. It's neither the time, nor the place. You would find much better traction at another point in time, when the people you are trying to spread the message to are less likely to feel that you are essentially pissing on the memories of their dead relatives. It's even more stupid given the fact that 95% of the people who post here (and even in this thread for crying out loud) are anti-war anyway. All you have succeeded in doing is alienating people who are already sympathetic towards your cause. You lose more than you can gain by using this event as your soapbox.

Fucking zealots.

You always hear a great deal of stuff about honour and noble sacrifice and protecting our freedom and not a great deal about stupidity and waste and cynical exploitation. It does kind of come off as telling everyone why joining the army is a Good Thing to do...

7 pages in this thread.

Guy was a loony, made a poor decision, got arrested. No need to get emotional. Annoyed sure. Living in Belgium, I have gone to Ypres and Passendale on November 11th on numerous occasions. I paid my respects, went to the WWI museum and listened to the last post alongside veterans of WWII. I visited the graves of both Allied and German forces (there are numerous impressive ones, much like on the beaches of Normandy).
I get why this takes place. But let's not overdo it here: this man needn't be lynched. He's clearly got some issues.
