its labelling shit as chillstep or brostep or whatever thats pointless in my opinion, hence why I'm not a big fan of it. It's all subjectively either good or bad electronic music, if you wanna find something decent and lasting, make an effort thats goes further than just typing chillstep into youtube

I don't how anyone could be okay with that name. That's probably the worst -step prefix I could think of.

I really disagree with this, brostep has nothing in common with most dubstep so it makes sense to differentiate. Some people dislike sub-genres but its not gonna stop them from appearing and it doesn't pigeon-hole producers.

But, chill-step is stupid, yeah.

Chillstep seems like a silly word, but only if you think about it too much or too little. To me, chillstep is just dubstep. It's laid back, like "pure" dubstep. Forgive that terminology. However, because of all the different sub-genres, you need all those silly names so you can grasp the reality of it all. Dubstep, chillstep, brostep, deathstep, darkstep, mathstep, whateverstep; It's all just to be the most specific so you know what you like most. At the end of the day, the name doesn't matter. People get worked up about the names of sub-genres because die hard enthusiasts get upset if you call something something it shouldn't be called for some reason. A great man once said, "What's in a name?" I think it was Skrillex.

I call 'pure' dubstep, dubstep. It fits.

i don't like it it's really not needed, plus taking the dub out of dubstep to describe the more laid back and probably more dub influenced stuff to be replaced with a term as broad as chilled is dumb, not to mention it just sounds lame.

you don't call chilled hip hop chill-hop so why would you do it with dubstep? there's no need to combine the two words to describe it if it's just being used as a short term for "chilled dubstep" too, since there would be no other distinctive element to it other than being "chilled".

and also there's no real universal idea of what it truly is, i mean we'd all have our general personal opinion on it, but the line from chilled to heavy in this genre is pretty damn thin(the dungeon sound is a good example), a lot of tracks are chilled but at the same time kinda not, because of a lot of the heavy basslines which can blur that line, which makes me less inclined to want to label it with the chilled term.

although i can nearly understand people using it to describe the sound that guys like Phaeleh make, but when people are trying to claim shit like dutch flowers n mala's stuff ect.. as chillstep it just gets retarded.

so pretty much if there was a distinctive sound in it being pushed i could understand but if it's just being used to describe chilled stuff it's just needlessly over complicating things imo..

Isn't chillstep lame stuff with "chillout" trancey synth pads and weak wub wub wubs and youtube montages of mountain scenery and people jackin each other off in the comments? I certainly don't associate it with "chill" stuff like Quest or Skream - Lemon Drive or anything.

haha yeah I am one of those people who dislike sub-genres; getting obsessed with liking or hating certain ones is just a waste of time imo when you could just use it to find more music of a much broader variety that isnt so labelled

I hate the attitude of people who use 'chillstep' the most. A lot of them act like they're down with the scene and know all these things and are really smug about it. 'Oh yeah, dubstep but real chill' *links to some skrillex tune with cheesy pads and a less loud midrange wobble*
