Dark dubstep, fair amount of unsigned/amateur tracks from the forums too.

its not about the artists mayne.

the one hit wonder aspect is part of what made mainstream UKG songs so great. you remember the tracks like it was yesterday, the rest doesnt matter

Artful Dodger is immense, he had quite a few bangers. I remember buying at least 4 or 5 cassettes from Asda, so I'm saying that's pretty mainstream.

Sweet Like Chocolate, Girls Like Us, Flowers, So Solid, Oxide & Neutrino, some of the Sunship tunes, MJ Cole - Sincere, Jaimeson, The Streets, DJ Luck & MC Neat, Whoever produced that Shola Ama tune, Misteeq. There were bare!

Weren't many with much staying power, but that's the way of the charts and electronic music.

Was that mainstream at the time, though, or was it hardcore connoisseur's stuff at the time that's become mainstream in retrospect now we've forgotten / don't care about the cheesy lightweight vocal stuff that was actually selling big back then?

Genuine question...

Also, it kind of feels like picking a genre where the "mainstream" is fairly underground by any normal standards is kind of cheating - I mean, mainstream sludgecore is probably stuff like Sunn O)))) or Boris but it doesn't really make sense to compare them to Chaka Khan or whatever. If you haven't actually got stuff charting, you haven't really got a "mainstream" imo.

This.

But Artful pretty much produced all of his garage tunes didn't he?

Just forgot Daniel Bedingfield - Gotta Get Through This too. Didn't that get to number 1?
