I agree and he will have to learn and get experienced with things he already have lots of experencience and do quick in FL, it takes a lot of time. That's the exact reason i stick with Ableton, at this point i'm used to it and there is no other reason really. The move to MAC is the same case! It is just an unfarily expensive PC that you are not used to.

Yeah the most important part is not which is the best, because there is no best, but what you prefer. Everybody likes different setups and workflows so you have to find out what suits your needs yourself.

A tutorial for some odds n ends maybe but you learn by being hands-on.
That's true. The videos helped me out when I first started using Ableton though, so I figured I'd throw it out there.

I will agree that it would be nice to just have the instruments show up in the playlist, especially with the changes that came with FL Studio 10, where now it lets you just put any pattern anywhere instead of designated lines. It can be confusing and unfortunate if you make a mistake.

You've been able to do that for quite a number of versions now I think

I disagree. Sampler functionality is VERY important when working with drums for me which you dont have when using sliced loops. Neither do i see the point of placing every hi-hat in your track manually, if everything is sitting in its separate sampler without using a pattern thats what happens.

A DAW facilitates your workflow, some better than others
depends on how you learn the DAWs ins and outs though

I suppose you have plenty of feedback to consider already but I suppose I'll add my two cents anyway.

Ableton is a great switch from Fl studio. Live is pretty much the industry standard for electronic music these days so learning it is not a bad idea. One thing I will say though is that after having been to audio school watching people make shit music with an 8 million dollar studio, I learned a valuable lesson. It's not about the tools you use. It's how you use them.

Overall I'd say make the switch and bounce back and forth if you'd like. As you grow comfortable with ableton I'm sure you'll use fl studio less and less. Once you find a workflow, stick with it. To keep changing is counterproductive.

Now go make some music and remember... YouTube is your best friend!

Haha... that is a side effect I suppose, however YouTube accelerates the learning process. Usually I find it's best to read and article and then search for a video that shows the method in action. To each there own however.

I agree in principle.
How often do you think ppl read first?
It's a daily issue here.
Folks could read the manual but they don't, they don't even search youtube.

I like using step sequencer. It's easy to get the hits approximately where you want faster, then go into piano roll and shift them around to fine tune.

Thats really wicked, mixing spontaneous patterns created in FL Studio, is this Version out yet ?

It can't be said enough. Working in Ableton Live 8 is a dream come true. There are only a few minor setbacks like that it's only 32 bit, no detachable spectrum etc... Those problems will be fixed with the launch of Ableton 9 in January though. My advice: Switch to the Ableton 8 Demo and get to know it and then buy Ableton 9 when it comes out :)
