I think the Novation Zero is an awesome controller. Look at the Akai mini series. I had an Akai LPD8 and the knobs worked great. Nice movement.
ooh the Novation Zero is what I want, bit pricey though. LPD8 does look good. I'm also thinking maybe just going full-fledged and buying a Maschine or something soo I can get some rotaries as well some MIDI pads too... but again, pricey

Maschine is a whole other animal though. I just scored an MK1 for like 300USD some months ago. Easily worth the money. The Maschine work flow is amazing. The software/hardware combo is perfect. I can get lost just writing beats on it. I need to do an all Maschine project some day.
I don't know how it is using Maschine as just a MIDI controller, haven't bothered with that. But honestly if you are just looking for quick and easy knobs and pads the LPD8 isn't terrible. I never got on with the pads much, but used the knobs on the regular.

Yes. Maschine's software is damn near a DAW, I haven't tapped into most of it. You could more or less complete projects inside Maschine if you wanted to. Easily a good live performance tool. Can be loaded as a VST or used stand alone. Also you can route up to 8 channels of audio to outs on your interface opening up other live and studio possibilities. If/When I try to put a live something together, it'll be with Maschine.

yeah you could effectively make tunes without a DAW if you've got Maschine.
yeah I know Maschine's on another level fragments, but then again i wanna just become more hardware oriented with my music and it looks like a good place to start really. So sick of just a keyboard and a mouse lol.
and I'll repeat my earlier question, anyone used the AKai MPD32? is it any good?
Yeah mpd32 is a good tool. Not if you have a Maschine though.
Maschine was not really what I was looking for and I'm looking to get away from the computer more.
If you like working with sampling a lot, it's great. But I've been looking for a synth from having Maschine after 1-2 weeks.
Keeping my drums in mschn and redrum though.

I had an MPD24 and the pads were horrible, not sure if they're any better on the 32. The LPD8 is a great little tool and has much better pads than the MPD24 I had. At the price it comes at you can always sell it and upgrade to something else if it isn't giving you what you want.
