How to reproduce sounds? O.O

Post by P-255 » Tue Dec 04, 2012 8:33 pm

So first there's a typical epic trance chord lead, which I got from a sample I like a lot, but have spent countless hours trying to reproduce and nothing. :(
Second there's a typical low end portamento bass, which again, I like a lot but can't seem to reproduce either. Here are the sounds: Soundcloud

There's a whole thread for this kind of thing, but I'll humor you anyways before the ranting commences.

The lead sounds like detuned saws in multiple octave registers with lots of release/wet with a lot of reverb.

The Bass patch sounds like a square with a little saw... there's another layer of something going on to get an almost kick like clicky attack.

I think we should have a sticky that reads:

Title: BEFORE YOU POST A "HOW TO MAKE THIS SOUND..."
Post Content: "Have you tried detuned saws? If not... try before posting!"

bounce a waveform, load up a sampler, make two groups / different voices whatever you want to call it, detune one of the samples.
or bounce the waveform, load up a sampler and apply unisono

Detune it relative to everything else in the song.

Chorus is a little different from unison. Chorus usually has an LFO that alters the detune amount of the duplicated signal(s) where Unison doesn't. With unison it just dupes the signal, pans each channel slightly and detunes each by a set amount. To get a more classic unison sound out of your chorus plugin turn the LFO parameter to 0 (if you have that control, some don't)

You could also apply a couple of (differing) millisecond delay to a few aux returns, pan each slightly to taste, route them to a buss and hey presto.

Unison/Chorus/sample delay[/DETUWN3DS8WZ :6: ] e.t.c. all get their signature sound from basic phase relationship modulation between otherwise identical waveforms. Knowing that, you can achieve the same results any number of ways, even with one osc.

True. Some choruses also do stereo widening.
Forgot to mention there's also a plugin by mda called detune. Not sure exactly how it works but it detunes.
