Re: Percussion Techniques
grab any sound and shorten the clip till you only hear the transient... can be anything.

Youtube has heaps of compilations.
Re: Percussion Techniques
Wow, thanks for this. I had some of these ripped by myself but having them together is nice.jonahmann wrote:http://www.mediafire.com/file/yiy8pcvtw ... ks%201.rartravis baker wrote:any breaks other than the amen, that are clean mate? im on a hunt for some jazzy breaks

Re: Percussion Techniques
Hey man long time no talk! lol. Percussion is my weak point for sure, but as people have said it's good to experiment with stuff. I went to my mates house with a mic off the playstation game 'singstar' and was able to use a lot of these. Some were shite, some were awesome. My personal favorite was a gold ball bouncing off the concrete floor. But i had tons of hits of random stuff. My song 'realtime' was where i used most of these samples.
Also as people have said, using random samples from around the house can give some nifty drum hits. Get your pots and pans out and batter them, clap, whistle, sing, stamp, stomp, fart, finger yourself while headbanging and sample it!
Pitching these weird samples can give a good result. Effects, adsr modelling, reversing ect.
Try making a sample of your own, use an envelope to make a slow attack and fast release, add reverb to it and then reverse it. Layer with a pop or a small amount of white noise and fuck around with it until you have a good strong transient. Ect ect!
I've always been quite fond of your percussion, but it's always good to shake it up a bit.

Super experimental.

I have a thread here discussing the track, and offering you the chance to remix it, more details in thread! See what you can come up with!

Re: Percussion Techniques
Oh, also try this:
get your drum loop, reverse it, add some reverb/delay and reverse it again. This tends to give a nice buildup to each hit, just don't overdo it.

Re: Percussion Techniques
I in Live, modulate the LFO and Volumes of HI hats using a simpler or sampler. This allows a more organic flow and sound for hihats instead of a sterile sound.
Re: Percussion Techniques
I find it more effective to get in there and change the velocity of the individual hits yourself. Gives you way more control of the feel... Volume plays a huge part in getting a nice shuffle/swing, so it's hard to get something coherent by just throwing on an LFO and hoping for the best.tintala wrote:I in Live, modulate the LFO and Volumes of HI hats using a simpler or sampler. Re: Percussion Techniques
the other night i was eating peanuts so i shook the can of peanuts into the microphone. sounds really nice

This, definitely!Houston Weather wrote:Pitch things up and down
Also, I can't recommend enough investing in a mic or recorder to collect your own found sounds. I like recording stuff with the mic on the other side of the room for a really raw sound, which can then be piched up or down to sound unrecognisable but still really cool.

Re: Percussion Techniques
or just take the sustain right down yea? Much quickerhasezwei wrote:take any sample
apply pitch envelope
like 20 ms or so, have it start waay up and go down to the bottom quickly
there you go, turns everything into percussion
Re: Percussion Techniques
nah, no punch to it. that'd be like saying a sine wave with no sustain would be a kick drum. it only kicks when it's got a rapidly dropping pitch, thats literally how drums* work55stevieboy2010 wrote:or just take the sustain right down yea? Much quickerhasezwei wrote:take any sample

(*i am sure there are some that don't but that's besides the point)
Re: Percussion Techniques
honestly this is what i've been doing lately. and honestly for switching that up i just resample breaks when i'm digging(could vary from some bossa nova, latin jazz tune to some like 80s avant garde or something)StratosFear wrote:I like to use non-drum samples as drums. For example in my latest tune I use a shower door as part of the kick, a wood block and a kitchen cabinet as part of the snare/clap, pill bottles rattling as shakers, and a light switch on/off as most of the hihats. It adds variation to otherwise boring (imo) sounds, and it keeps me entertained.

The high pitch at the front emulates the transient.hasezwei wrote: it only kicks when it's got a rapidly dropping pitch, thats literally how drums* work
