Some advice from xKore in this months Future Music, pretty standard stuff:
>Use a transient modulator to enhance the transient
>Boost at 200Hz or wherever your sweet spot is
>Sidechain lightly to synths
>Layer a ride to add a splashy sound

^ that's a great tip! i normally follow the same general guideline as well. ALWAYS be using transient shapers on drum channels, they can be extremely pertinent to shaping your sounds :)

as for a free VST that does this amazingly well, check out schaack audio transient shaper

China cymbal+ bit crush+ reverb sounds rad as a splashy "tail" element for a snare as well

Can't stress enough how important a nice, strong transient is for punchy kicks and snares.

Process your snares in MID SIDE in order to use the mono part of the snare to sidechain with mono elements. Put emphasis on reverb in the extremes of the stereo field and create a dynamic atmosphere involved with the snare on the SIDE channel (light sidechain to other percussion). Remember, it will be critical to use layered samples that are not all mono.
