Question: the Plastic People rig

Post by autonomic » Fri Mar 31, 2006 8:56 pm

Does anyone know the details of the sound system at Plastic People? Particularly the wattage but I'd be curious about sub sizes/numbers too.

And how does it compare with the rigs at DMZ (16K now according to Mala's post) and (D/S)ubloaded?

Since hitting FWD>> last year I've been getting more and more intrgued by the tech details of sound systems, how they move the sound, and how they're put together.

While not regarding the plastic people system, there are a no. of places you might post which might help you out...wouldve thought they could point you towards some good reading...

Try posting for attn of dissident on hijackbristol.co.uk or maybe just a general one on squatjuice? Maybe they wont rate it on squatjuice ive heard it can sometimes be a rough forum! I stress 'i heard'! And hopefully the dissident boys wont become too inundated with questions! They've got a website also: www.dissident-faction.co.uk. They're the ones who powered subloaded II and III, but apparently now its part of DMT (another big bristol system-based collective) for IV (i think). The dissident system for me is the best system ive heard...not the biggest but amazing for clarity and quality. Apparently its a lot about how well the actual speakers are carved and shaped. But my experience and knowledge is very very limited compared to many.

Plastic People is a sick setup mind, the sound in there is so perfect for dubstep, so enveloping! And again without being painful

As far as I know, Plastic People's rig is F1 (Funktion One)? Not absolutely sure though.

Dissident is ridiculous, we had them last nite for Noir and it was sounding fantastic. It's only rated ar around 8k, but in reality the wattage is not really the important thing, it's more about the quality and how well it's tuned up. Dissdent, for example, sounds like it could have been built just to play dubstep (although it wasn't) - I was chatting to one of the crew last nite and even he was loving how good his rig sounded. Subloaded 2 last year with the full rig was astonishing. :o

Man it tears me up I had to be up and out of bristol for this one. And for bloody kode9 too! Devastating. Was it a good one? As if it needs to be asked. I rate the dissident boys so much, they are a very sound bunch, they do their thing so well but theyve got zero attitude. And as you say, their system is absolutely toight

thanks ThinKing. more gear and data to pore over.

i'm starting to imagine how when i'm middle-aged and heading towards retirement, i'll take up building speaker cabinets in the garage as a hobby. except i'll have nowhere to use them. maybe that's when i'll become the weird old guy who's at all of the events in whatever new bass-driven scene they come up with in 20 years. my rigs will be at all the events and i'll get respect from all the youngers despite having lost all fashion sense decades earlier. i'll be that wrinkled geezer bopping around with a grin on his face in the photos. the kids will think i'm crazy when really i'm just deaf.

Oy, careful, that's a bit too close to the bone, :) and you left out bass and BREAKBEATS, I'm certainly not deaf, and you can do all that without needing the rigs I reckon.

Now the questioon is after ten years whether I've got the energy to start improving nigh on buried deck skills, now that would be novel, someone who's older than most dubstep followers parents dj'ing :)

And thanks to everyone who's been well good with me on this scene so far, especially the Bristol crew, who I've had a bit more contacvt with, number of class acts down there. Was expecting a lot more negativity for being there than I've received.

Although the best sound I've come across so far in only five dubstep nights admittedly, was January's DMZ, and I haven't done the Leeds one, or Subloaded yet, during Youngsta's and Hatcha's set at Plastic People I found the pressure something else, and any info re exactly what's happening physiologically, mentally, and soundwave wise during experiences like that I would love to receive.

Sub to sound seems like quantum mechanics versus newtonian for me, very very peculiar

Interesting question, soundguy!

Guess it depends a huge amount on whether you toke... I reckon if you spend three hours at Fwd>>, even if you don't smoke you get stoned by default. Can smell skunk from the staircase :D

^^ @ hamzen.

BIG UP yourself! i was making light of myself, but not taking the piss. i seriously hope i'm that interesting/interested several decades on. i'm only 30 and already i often feel a little out of place with the younger folk. but so far dubstep seems to be maintaining a very friendly and welcoming vibe.

and yes, the psycho-/physiological side is really interesting and largely uncharted territory.

That's an interesting one. Yeah I do but not humougously so, and I don't have a sense of smell so I might have missed the intensity there :), which might well be part of the equation I was missing, but also felt it had a lot to do with the fact that you get surround sound there andd are so close to speakers from all directions, cranium pulsing was a first for me, and well interesting, and could see it getting very addictive :)

But I'm also doing a trawl on the effects of sub-bass, know the US military have checked this out so there must be research around

No sweat, I had taken it as a tease , I probably wouldn't have responded otherwise. And re the age thing, I think if you have the passion for the music, my experience is it creates enough respect, especially with those really committed. I went through this in d'n'b early days and felt very lucky for the experience, so much so that I ended up doing the intro sets for our local sound system, and have made probably the best friendships of my life from it. But since I've been waiting 10 years for anything to hit me that deeply again, well I did think that was it.

And then along comes the dubstep, and blows me away even more. I HAD to get out to nights, but was expecting loads of grief and attitude and it's been minimal so far, fingers crossed :)

To be honest I feel like one very lucky old git at the mo who's seriously hit the jackpot, this music is fuckin class.
