my midwest usa, dubstep at a club once a month IF i am lucky, addicted to nicotine but more addicted to bass self says y'all are terribly spoiled if you could even THINK of not going out to hear some dope music because you have to step outside for a smoke once in a while.
lord.
come live in indianapolis for 6 months. seriously. i will give you a place to sleep, you can smoke in the house (and at the clubs), but you have to bring me dubplates.
you would all run screaming and crying from redneck and republican hell. but you could have a smoke on the way outta town! ;p
p.s. yes, i am being a tad snarky and more than a little facetious, but damn! seriously! y'all. are. spoiled.

i got a futon in pensyltucky too.
i smoke, but i dont smoke in my house because i have kids that dont need to suffer from my ignorance... however, at home, every time i kneel down to my record box, i get blasted with a feild of stale club smoke emminating off my vinyl. its gross, and i can only imagine how that shit smells to a true non-smoker.
i was in san francisco a few months ago, and the nonsmoking ban was a weird thing to me, because a bar is the only place i smoke indoors.. it comes with the territory in pa... so it just didnt feel right to me.
when the ban does go down here in pennsylvania, im not going to get up in arms about it... i will go outside. its a war worth loosing.

come on mate - this is meant to be a civilised conversation about whether or not the venues we in London are reaching every week that are being effected explicitly by the ban, yes perhaps we will get used to it - but at the moment it is making a difference - sorry if i bore you but at the same time i want to see what everyone else is saying, i dont smokes cigarettes either - perhaps in this case I could make an exceptionhera wrote:

You gotta understand, people from america have been listening to complaints about this for years. A very long time. I live in Italy....when the smoking ban happened here, people complained...Jaime wrote:come on mate - this is meant to be a civilised conversation about whether or not the venues we in London are reaching every week that are being effected explicitly by the ban, yes perhaps we will get used to it - but at the moment it is making a difference - sorry if i bore you but at the same time i want to see what everyone else is saying, i dont smokes cigarettes either - perhaps in this case I could make an exceptionhera wrote:

The Italians were PASSIONATE smokers (and still are) but they got used to it. So did Boston. California. Ireland. Italy. France. Come to think of it, almost all of europe except you guys. A significant portion of the US. You can smoke in Greece.
Anyways, point is, get used to it. You will alll be able to sneak a spliff/cigarette in the club/bar once in a while, but this is the law where you live now. Typing about it on the internet will change nothing.
And I for one have heard people bitch about it enough...I realize I am now complaining, but you guys had it good for a long time after a lot of the rest of the western world. Just trying to put it in perspective a bit.[/i]

Jaime in the case of last wednesday @ plastic, the fact that there were people outside smoking actually drew a couple extra heads in as they could see something was going on inside. on a friday this would be obvious but on a quiet weds it actually helped the promotors a little, to get more people in, i saw the final numbers and there were more people in there than you counted.
ontopic: im a smoker (no blunts), especially on gig days, but a fresh club is quite nice actually, no dry eyes and no smelly clothes, and u feel fresher the day after.

agree totally with these 2 points, interesting threadCorpsey wrote: Furthermore, not being able to bun at dubstep nights is a shitter. Can't be arsed to leave the club half the time either.
And finally- since I haven't got a cigarette I substitute it with another drink. Spending far too much on drinks now.
Smoking ban has really made a difference imo, looking at how busy FWD was before and after teh ban really highlighted it.
Dubstep and ganj go together like reggae & smoking, trance and pills or the '60s and acid, so when im on the dancefloor i get an urge to light up.
The constant movement of people in and out of the club and on and off hte dancefloor hurts the vibe, from my view.
Finally by not allowing smoking inside, youve got to allow people to smoke outside. 40 minute queues just to get outside are ridiculous, either let me smoke inside or outside, but dont make me stand on the stairs for a whole set.
However, its a disgusting habit and kills barstaff who have every right to earn a living without being poisoned, so.... i think im in favour, even though it hurts the night

u could argue that the barstaff culd just naff off and work somewhere else though. ppl werent allowed to smoke near the bar before so wot harm is some geezer having a browns in the corner of a club really gonna do to anyone? london air is fucking filfthy as it is, although i know the ban applies to everywhere else... but yeh agreed on the queing thing, that really is a piss takeseebs2000 wrote:Smoking ban has really made a difference imo, looking at how busy FWD was before and after teh ban really highlighted it.

i see wot ur saying but if u go up london there all fuckin italian students n shit who work bars probably for the thrill as oppose to the need to sustain a decent living with the menial wages it pays, get mehseebs2000 wrote:yeah i agree about one man in the corner, cos that man is usually me. But when it comes down to who has the higher priority, the working man trying to earn a living, or the punter having a night out, i would never tell a barman to get another job.
Re: DUBSTEP vs THE SMOKING BAN - LONDON
ok so i'm back from my weekend of insanity (big up all the krew that reached 2-Step Experiments in east ldn! brap!!!) and i see this thread, basically a thread v close to my heart atmJaime wrote:WHO IS WINNING?
There has obviously been a lot of talk about all this - I remember a lot of these questions were asked after the first non-smoking DMZ but this is a dedicated thread - maybe there has been one before but I couldnt find it... maybe I am a mong. After reading something Poax said about House Parties maybe being the future or something or other I thought it would be cool to see what everyone thinks....
A few questions: answer all or none of them
Are numbers in clubs suffering?
In turn are lower profile nights losing out by comparison to full blown events such as tonight at the end?
Will smoker friendly house parties become the dubstep way?
Can hardcore smokers last in plastic people (or any given club) from 11pm - 3.30am? Can going raving be like going to the cinema, boarding a flight etc, where smoking is just something you forget about for a bit.?
Is the atmosphere in clubs fledging due to the back and forth, outside shuffle of weed and tab smokers alike?
Is the atmosphere in clubs "not what it used to be" with the lack of hazey smoke and less pungent human odours?
Does it concern you?
((Can other mans from different cities pipe up and tell us about the ban, dubstep and their cities too....? ))
A1 - The numbers in clubs arent suffering that much, its more the number of people in the club @ any1 time cos people are going in and out all night, thus the club seems more empty.
A2 - Yes smaller nights are losing out to "big" nights
A3 - imo house parties are now THE ONLY WAY dubstep is gonna move >>
A4 - Nope "hardcore smokers" (i wud class myslef in this vein) cannot last 11pm-3am with no smoke. Beer and nicotine go hand in hand (just look @ top ten hit "Nicotine and Alchohol" by Oasis as an example of the "normalness" of a cig with your beer.
A5 - Yep the atmos in clubs now is DEAD
A6 - Yep it defo "aint what it used to be"
A7 - it concerns me greatly
