Take a sound and downpitch it. Audio manipulation will be more important than synth choice if you ask me.

That will start you off.

Those guys are amazing sound engineers, I would love to get a deep understanding of their techniques.

you don't need any particular synth - get one good one and learn how to work it, and then you can make any sound with any synth.
