Top DJ's/ Artists of 2012
Re: Top DJ's/ Artists of 2012
no need to pass hate onto RA. Consistently the best site around along with FACT. Much better than the crap the likes of pitchfork & XLR8R churn out.
Re: Top DJ's/ Artists of 2012
2011 they were deffo the best and I couldnt really put anyone else above them in 2012 in terms of what they have done in the scene, headlining huge events etc (apart from Skrillex for instance but as I said I cant stand his stuff). They havent released as much as some others but they are smashing it with their overall exposure.... More so than 90% of other artists. I'm not saying I go out and drop Nero tunes in my sets... I drop stuff like Enigma Dubz, Badklaat, Hizzleguy, Ajapai, Dark Tantrums and the Rottun Recordings label. I wouldnt put any of them as the best in the scene though, I'm looking at it in an all-round sense. True Tiger I'd say are up there too though. Some proper heavyweight beats coming from them!!

I think the problem with the list and specifically in the case of Nero, is that you are not looking at it in an all-round sense. In fact, every producer you mention is either repetitive and unoriginal in doing the tear-out thing (I don't rate any of the producers you mention, they just do things by the numbers of tear-out and aren't even particularly good at what they do) or cross-over into popular music like Nero and Skrillex both of who's productions have little to nothing to do with dubstep any more.Loot wrote:, I'm looking at it in an all-round sense
What about Mala, Kahn, Swindle or even Skream. Those are producers that reached a very wide audience, brought fresh sounds to the table, from different angles whilst still being firmly rooted in dubstep and its aesthetics. I understand that you like tear-out or aggressive stuff but even producers like dub mechanics or Coki have done the aggressive style much better than anyone you mention tbh.
Nero released two electro records with pop influences and some filthy noises this year. Has little to do with dubstep at all tbh.
Re: Top DJ's/ Artists of 2012
Point well made Joeki. But it's just different opinions at the end of the day. There's something about that kind of "tear out" dubstep which I like a lot, be it mindless or repetitive lol it's still the type of beat which I prefer mixing in clubs and it does get the best reactions.
Regarding Nero & Skrillex doing their cross-over thing, it takes artists like these to develop beats which are accessible to the wider audience and draw people in from different music tastes. Subsequently these guys bring a load of extra exposure to the scene and that's what I'm getting at in the article. More exposure means more fans, more money and more new artists to the genre. Of course Mala, Skream, Coki etc are still up there as the best. Nero have managed to create an extremely strong brand for themselves though, larger than any of the artists you've mentioned especially when you look at reach (social media & PR, worldwide bookings etc). Maybe they have strayed away from the traditional dubstep but the fact that they've just collaborated with Muse, "the best band in the world" (Q Awards) on a dubstep track shows they're still making big moves in the dubstep (and general music) scene in 2012 and into 2013...

Best DJ would probably be joe nice he has the best and most consistent radio show in my opinion. Best producer would probably be compa or kahn.
