DUBSTEP vs THE SMOKING BAN - LONDON

If it's a money issue though, at least the people sitting outside smoking all night have paid their entrance, and presumably still buy drinks. I worry more about the vibe on the dancefloor than I do about clubs getting the numbers in, but then I don't promote in London so I'm not really one to talk I guess.Letitia wrote:
People are always saying its just about the music etc. but I have started to think that they are chatting shit when everyone just sits outside all night. Would you rather have a decent soundsystem or be able to smoke outside? cuz if everyone carries on like it is now there wont be small nights
Were the numbers at platform 1 much worse than normal? I read that thread the day after the last one and my impression was there were about as many people around as usual, but it just looked like less 'cos of the bigger second room and the fact that half the crowd just sat outside all night.
Will be interesting to see how we fare in Leeds with the next Ruffage... fingers crossed.

its not the money the numbers were the same which is good for august but if so many people are outside then the amosphere is definately effected, which isnt good in the long term. i understand people wanting to sit outside i find myself doing it lots now but its just difficult when youve got good people playing to half empty room and theres a much bigger difference when its half of 100 than when its half of 300 or 1000

i work in a bar at the mo and i think you would be perfectly entitled to tell me to get another job. Its not like its got a pension anyway, and people are still going to throw glasses at your head, cigarette or not.
I think it's all part of a bigger picture ... In recent years it's become harder to bring a sound system into a club cos of licensing issues about extra equipment and so forth ... add the smoking ban to that and the result must be that "unofficial" venues are the way forward. But doing such venues is hard work, even once you've found them you often end up controlling everything yourself, security, running the bar etc instead of delegating all that aspect to a club who are already set up for it. There are plusses and minuses to that, of course. It's fair to say that I've had some of the best, and also some of the worst, experiences running a sound system in squats. Whereas clubs tend to be more middle of the road.
i considered hollowing out a puffa jacket, seal the lining and the smoke into it while im inside.stanton wrote:What is needed is the opposite of an oxygen bar. Smoke ready and waiting for you in a compressed form, that you can strap to your face.
it would work but would stink and look proper strange

Its ideas like that that enabled us to get to the moon.
I wanted a new puffa jacket last year, but I knew that as soon as wore it out it'd end up with a cigarette burn in it. I may now invest in one since this threat no longer looms over garments of synthetic fibre.

Totally on point Whistla. And others who have mourned the decrease of chilled out spliff-filled nights.DJ Whistla wrote:ok so i'm back from my weekend of insanity (big up all the krew that reached 2-Step Experiments in east ldn! brap!!!) and i see this thread, basically a thread v close to my heart atmJaime wrote:WHO IS WINNING?
There has obviously been a lot of talk about all this - I remember a lot of these questions were asked after the first non-smoking DMZ but this is a dedicated thread - maybe there has been one before but I couldnt find it... maybe I am a mong. After reading something Poax said about House Parties maybe being the future or something or other I thought it would be cool to see what everyone thinks....
A few questions: answer all or none of them
Are numbers in clubs suffering?
In turn are lower profile nights losing out by comparison to full blown events such as tonight at the end?
Will smoker friendly house parties become the dubstep way?
Can hardcore smokers last in plastic people (or any given club) from 11pm - 3.30am? Can going raving be like going to the cinema, boarding a flight etc, where smoking is just something you forget about for a bit.?
Is the atmosphere in clubs fledging due to the back and forth, outside shuffle of weed and tab smokers alike?
Is the atmosphere in clubs "not what it used to be" with the lack of hazey smoke and less pungent human odours?
Does it concern you?
((Can other mans from different cities pipe up and tell us about the ban, dubstep and their cities too....? ))
A1 - The numbers in clubs arent suffering that much, its more the number of people in the club @ any1 time cos people are going in and out all night, thus the club seems more empty.
A2 - Yes smaller nights are losing out to "big" nights
A3 - imo house parties are now THE ONLY WAY dubstep is gonna move >>
A4 - Nope "hardcore smokers" (i wud class myslef in this vein) cannot last 11pm-3am with no smoke. Beer and nicotine go hand in hand (just look @ top ten hit "Nicotine and Alchohol" by Oasis as an example of the "normalness" of a cig with your beer.
A5 - Yep the atmos in clubs now is DEAD
A6 - Yep it defo "aint what it used to be"
A7 - it concerns me greatly
A2 -I don't think that smaller nights will *necessarily* lose out to big nights, I think its the physical set-up of the venue that will matter: places that have a terrace bit like Corsica Studios will come into their own. Its a bit different going out for a toke there, instead of queuing to go out for a smoke at a big night.
A4- There's no way one spliff can last from 11pm-3am.
A5 - One of the main reasons why i loved going to FWD was to toke, have a gentle dance in the corner and LISTEN. I haven't dared to go back since the ban...

A6 - AND we need to something about the sweaty smells.

dubstep makes me happy

I find that having a wash and using some deodorant before I go out works wonders.ms a bourdain wrote: A6 - AND we need to something about the sweaty smells.

Your right there methinks. I have been planning to put on a club night but reading threads like these and hearing people talk about the atmosphere of these places talking a hit is putting me off massively.blackmass plastics wrote:Get an empty warehouse and a crowbar , or go deep into the woods and take a generator ...just do it yourself and make up your own rules if you need em...
