Acoustic treatment, finishing off bedroom studio.

Post by outdropt » Fri Jan 04, 2013 3:26 pm

Just finished redoing my room. The Christmas season was good to me!! (Actually, i was good to myself seeing as i paid for the renovation)

Image

I am running Ableton's size at 200%, now I can see all of my channels in one window, its fucking awesome. No more scrolling!

Now all i need to do is Acoustically treat my room. I have done some research, read through http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html (great read by the way) and saw some information on applying dense fiberglass to your walls.

"Without question, the most effective absorber for midrange and high frequencies is rigid fiberglass... "
"Rigid fiberglass is great stuff, and you can cut it fairly easily with a razor knife, but it's not very pleasant to work with because the fibers can make your skin itch. While handling it you should wear work gloves, and you won't be too cautious if you also wear a dust mask."
"Once the fiberglass is attached to the wall, you can build a wooden frame covered with fabric and place the frame over the fiberglass for appearance. If that's too much work, you can cut pieces of fabric and staple them to the edges of the wood strips. Nearly any porous fabric is appropriate..."

So yesterday i go out, get 160 sq/ft of rigid fiber glass. Get 10 yards (approximately 180 sq/ft) of polyester fabric and start to upholster the fiber glass...

My parent bug the fuck out,

"This is meant for interior walls"
"fiberglass is dangerous, it gets caught in your lungs like asbestos"
"your not bringing that in the house"

I showed them the research but they were not buying it. My dad called his friend that is in construction and he says the stuff is dangerous and the particles of fiber glass are so small, they can go through fabric.

Long story short, my dad agreed to pay half for real acoustic panels :h:

I do agree with them though.

What do you guys think of this? I thought this fiber glass technique was widely used but in retrospect, if i did end up applying it to my walls:

1. While applying the fiberglass i could spread it all over my room
2. If anyone presses on the fiberglass panel it could push fiberglass out into the air

Also, I am looking for some nice looking acoustic panels/foam. Any suggestions?

I personally wouldn't bother with acoustic treatment in a cheap bedroom studio - I'd spend the money on gear.

The easiest way to waste your time is to fuck with audio and NOT be able to hear what you're doing.

just because you're in an untreated room doesn't mean you can't hear what you're doing, all of the production masterclass videos i've watched of Icicle, Kryptic Minds, Alix Perez etc, artists that i'd consider to have very polished tunes just work in untreated rooms.

I'd agree that it's not really worth it, unless you spend good money and really know what you're doing (and of course are planning to be in that bedroom for a while) it could be a waste of time and money and end up quite messy.

I have a 10 by 12 room guys.... I know the acoustics are fucked up in my room.

I can hear a huge difference between my monitors and headphones. I can hear my room resonate when i turn up the volume. I know the frequency response is off and things tend to get muddier then when I play out of my speakers.

Tbh, i don't care for your opinions on why or why not acoustic treatment is necessary. I am looking to invest in bass bins and acoustic panels, regardless of what you say. What I do care about is the opinions of people that have acoustically treated their room. In regards to the material they used, placement, ease of application, ect.

I'm sick of trolls...

It's a great idea to start treating your room.. put some bass traps in the corners, hang some panels up above your head as well as behind your desk/pc/monitors, you can play around with a mirror to see how sound would bounce off, also if you are looking to buy some panels for example on ebay usually if it lists nothing about the frequency its not that great.

Nice info, this is what i was looking for :Q:

... Damn it, the only reason i tried to go with fiberglass is because it was a lot cheaper per sq/ft.... For 60sq/ft its 40$... on some websites for 60sq/ft of panels it was like 300$+...

Should've checked ebay :corncry:

The main concern is that fiberglass is very small and can be pushed out of the fabric if put under pressure. I might try this with the already open bag of insulation. Cant return the fabric anyways :?

My parents agreed to pay half of whatever i decide to get, in regards to manufactured acoustic panels so i might do two parallel walls with that and then add a 2-4 bass bins on ether wall/corner... What sucks is that my door is in the corner, my closet door in another corner and my bed in the third corner so i couldn't block that area.

My room is small and almost a square so its better to over compensate rather then under compensate ...

I have a 3m³ room, had a bit of trouble getting the acoustics right, there's literally foam panels everywhere but in the floor (ceramic, very reflexive) and a huge double window, sounds pretty bad but once you get rid of all the resonance and mud, it's just a matter of getting used to your bad acoustics haha

The way I read it was a guy who still lives with his parents (so will no doubt move out soon) has decided to buy fiber glass and stick it to his walls with daddy splitting the cost which sounds like a bad idea.

I know i have a problem too, after a while you just know the sound your walls make and you can hear the difference in frequency response walking from one side of the room to the other..

You would suggest making a room "dead"? Or maybe 3 walls covered, the only one uncovered being the wall that the speakers are pointing towards (so you at least get the initial reflection).... I gotta do something haha.

My initial setup was my speakers on the floor pointing at each other, with my gear in the corner of my room, me being to the right and behind the cone of one of the speakers.... Such a bad idea but its all i had, and when i reference my songs on other systems i notice that my bass sounds a lot weaker, probably due to the fact that i was referencing off the standing waves and the bass appeared much louder.

So, i am 19, i plan to move out in a year or so. I would stick the material to the wall with Velcro straps for easy removal and so i can use some of the same material where ever i move...

The fiber glass idea has been referenced in multiple acoustic treatment articles so to me, it does not sound like a bad idea, and it seems like people do it quit often...

Edit: Read it back and it sounded dickish, didn't mean to be

my first studio was in my mom's laundry room, we used a small bathroom as a vocal booth and stick some egg boxes and foam on the walls to get ride of snare and cymbal resonance, recorded underground's finest in there with nothing but an 8 pre interface, 2 overheads and 2 dynamic mics for kick and snare.

They gotta couple different options though,

Acoustic Wedge Foam
Acoustic Pyramid Foam
Acoustic Eggcrate Foam
Acoustic Spade Foam
Acoustic Grid Foam
Acoustic Wave Foam

Some more pricey than others but no frequency absorption details
