Shoegazey dubstep?
Shoegazey dubstep?
Any recommendations for shoegazey sounding dubstep? I really love some of the stuff I've heard from Orca...any other recommendations?

Re: Shoegazey dubstep?
it's not that hard...i'm just looking for stuff that sounds a bit inspired by shoegaze - hyetal being a good example.LACE wrote:shoegazey dubstep..what?
Re: Shoegazey dubstep?
I'm not sure what you mean. because shoegazey can refer to the typical shoegaz-vibe. Or can refer to the dense and multi-layered style of shoegaze.
I've always found the addition of space and beats hard to combine.
Could always listen to slowdive or other proper shoegaze acts that made beat induced tracks:
Re: Shoegazey dubstep?
thanks for the reply...lukid is amazing, and yeah...my favorite shoegaze acts were the ones that kinda veered away from guitar as the focal point, and more into electronic territory...seefeel is a good one that comes to mind, and some of the stuff i've heard from resplandor. the orca artists, specifically hyetal are the only sounds i've really found within the dubstep scene that kinda embody that same dreamy, drifty kinda vibe.joeki wrote:

Re: Shoegazey dubstep?
Maybe check out some of the Tri Angle catalogue out? I know it's considered Witch House, but most of the stuff there is pretty layered. Not so much Nineties/eighties inspired as Hyetal though.
Balam Acab, Holy Other,...
Maybe Sun Glitters, though that is more glitchy. It's actually a really good question as I find it challenging to come up with anwers. I love shoegaze, Slowdive MBV, more recent acts Like Jesu, Iroha...adore it. But it's hard to find like the electronic equivalent of that music. Especially withing spacey dubstep+off shoots.
Have you tried Pale Sketcher though?

i've heard a good bit of the tri angle catalog -- saw balam when we came thru with mogwai(!!!) a few months back, quite an amazing show! holy other, vessel, and of course clammy clams (tho i think he's a bit overrated). i'm glad you mentioned Jesu, they're a perfect example of a non-traditional shoegaze band that still carries that vibe sonically while bringing something different to the sound, and it's the same feeling i get from that hyetal song (phoenix, and some of his others but to a lesser extent). It's really a beautiful sound, I was hoping more producers would be pushing this sort of style.joeki wrote:Maybe check out some of the Tri Angle catalogue out? i know what you mean about it being hard to pinpoint within electronic music, especially dubstep. i do feel like the shoegeezer vibes have potential to translate though. to me atleast, the drums are a bit open-ended but the repetition and sort've motorik pulse of seefeel, for example, could easily translate in a way that i think hyetal nailed in phoenix...the synths in that tune are kinda droney and glimmery, the chord progression reminds me of jesu a bit and is really what sounds like shoegaze to me. blissful and dreamy, just so magical sounding with the bass.
im gonna check out sun glitters and pale sketcher, thanks much for the recommendations!
