The first time I heard it, I think it was on crappy headphones with no low end whatsoever and I thought "What's so great about this?.... This is boring and one dimensional." Then listened later with something that could reproduce the bass and it "clicked".

Is it valid to criticize a dubstep tune without the bass?

I'd say its not valid to critique any song on a system that's not designed to play it back as the producer intended, but I think that's a crime we've all been guilty of at some point.

Also Eddie Vedder performed this with Nuzrat..... also the keyboard sound is a hand pumped Indian instrument called a harmonium. I do not hear tabla or anything that remotely sounds like tabla :? ... just a percussive bass in the qawalli sample. Perhaps it's a cajon...
I don't think it's a cajon, it definitely has a fiber or animal skin sound to it, I'm thinking a percussive synth like those korg pads or collision, maybe layered and compressed with pitched sines.
What's a cajon?

Cajon literally means big box. It's a south american percussive instrument. It's a hollow box with a hole on its back end. Close to the hole there are guitar strings. If you hit the middle of the body you will get a warm kick drum sound, if you hit it near the edges you will get a snare drum sound. It's easy really easy to build and play.

What's dope about qawwali is how natural and whole it sounds. It doesn't seem like it's trying to be dubstep or anything like that, it has a deeper cultural quality to it, definitely a big in the "history of the sound". It's just a staple track. Qawwali is the shit.

And when i say cultural don't think oh it's ethnic cause of the samples. I'm saying culture as pertaining to this sound, you know what I'm talking about.

Here are some schematics I have saved, they are in portuguese though. It's pretty straight foward, just look at the pictures.

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/9171/cajonpagina2ju8.jpg
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/9303/cajonpagina3ul3.jpg

You can use a snare drum snare instead of guitar strings. The third picture says that the "tampo" should be made of the best wood you can find because that's the part that will get you the kick drum sound. Notice that the top edges aren't nailed. This gives an emphasis to the snare sound.

If you have access to decent and thick wood, you can also make a smaller snare-less cajon, it's the same shape but with the sides slightly angled and without the strings in the back. Depending on the wood, this can sound like a djembe or a bongo. I suggest reading about material proprieties for drums before buying the wood.

Thanks for this! I have access to people who are really into hand drumming and know quite a bit about hand made drums...I will consult with them about this. Def. post results if/when I get around to this. I have lists of projects miles long these days and less time to do them...

Re: latency...OK...yea, I haven't either...but it's a thing "they say" all time on some other forums I visit.
Yup, thats what makes it so awesome. Normal compression/ sidechaining is linear but peak controllers can go literally anywhere in your project. Make the kick trigger a reverb on your snare? You got it.

In fact, i need to do much more of that kind of thing.

Im not sure it would have been labeled dubstep at all if it didnt feature in the infamous breezeblock set in 2006.

You know off hand if that set is available for download (pay or free) anywhere (I'm about to google it anyway...just thought you might have a hint)? And yea, I agree about the peak controller, I'm going to stark experimenting with that a lot more.

Ill have a look around for you, actually would like a relisten myself as well. I know its a bit of nostalgia but there where some very epic moments in there. Aside from the fact that it basically launched dubstep internationally. It might be on my external hd.

Interesting, I've seen similar boxes used by some gypsy musicians in the south of Spain, will have a look into this :)

The thing with the peak controller is that the element that triggers it doesn't even have to be audible. I used to have white noise rises that were linked to a silent 4x4 kick so they were sucking in and out independantly of the any of the sounds that were being heard.

Not as much a fan of the VIP as the original, but that intro is just fucking lush, got this really big cathedral style vibe to it. Any idea on how to get the rushing sound that gradually slows down around 40s?
