PA Speakers ~$500

Post by Huj » Wed Jan 09, 2013 7:32 pm

Hey guys,

Up to this point I've just been a producer, but now I want to start DJing, I'd like to buy the best speakers I can for my money, and I thought you guys might be able to help! I'll be playing frat/sorority parties mostly. Rooms of probably... 300 max. I use Traktor, and the S2 controller, is there anything else other than PA speakers that I need in order to start playing live? Also, is it possible to start out playing with one speaker on mono, then move up to two once I've got the money? Or is that just gonna be complete shit?

Thanks!

good for you, you won't need a sub then

and why would you have to bring your own speakers?

Yeah some of the frats and sororities have speakers, but not all of them. Plus, I'd rather build up my own system that I know works, and sounds good than rely on someone else's setup. What do you guys think about using one speaker to start with? And why wouldn't I need a sub? I'm confused.

all the frats round here have systems. and if they don't then they rent speakers. I built a 2x18" for my fart. but i can see why you'd have your own rig for smaller parties. I think one speaker is gonna sound shitty, have you ever enjoyed music on one speaker? those mackies sound pretty damn good and they're light. we have jbl's at my frat that have taken some serious abuse and keep going. i'm talking barf crusted speaker cones. and if you want to play dubstep then a sub is kind of essential. you could possibly get a system that would sound OK for $500 used but that's really pushing it. even building your own cabinets you'd be pushing it on a $500 budget.

Thanks for the informative reply drake! By fart you mean sub I'm assuming. Never heard that one before, but then again I'm new to this. How difficult is it to build a speaker. What exactly do you have to do? I'm guessing you just buy the speaker and build the cabinet around it out of... I don't know plywood? Haha. And I haven't enjoyed music on one speaker but then again I've never tried it. I might be able to save up to get two speakers but then I couldn't afford a sub. If 500 is too low, let's talk under 1k. Do you think that's possible? I'm trying to get started asap so I'm trying to start with something I can build from. Maybe I could get a couple speakers for 1k or under then add a sub later?

fart is my slang for frat. and while you can build your own speakers, you'll probably have better results with store bought ones. Subs might be an exception to that, cause they're not quite as finicky. I'm thinking a pair of these would be your best bet if http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Thump15/, you could probably get away without a sub.

Hahaha I see. Those look pretty perfect. What would you suggest for a sub in the future? I'm guessing it's more important to avoid skimping on a sub, so I'm willing to pay a bit more for them. But I might be wrong about that idk.

Also, I see that most of these speakers use XLR inputs. My DJ controller "Traktor S2" has red and white RCA outputs. How do I get the audio into the speakers? Do I need an interface? Using preamped speakers by the way. No external amp.

^simple get an xlr to rca cable like this one- http://www.prebeat.co.uk/products/accu- ... nal-cable/, just hook it straight up to the speakers no interface required
