Distortion and Stereo Images
Lately I have been noticed that as I process my synths with distortion I lose the stereo information. For example, I had a sound I was making in fm8. I was using two instances of fm8 grouped. They were both slight variations on the same patch and were both panned fairly extreme left and right. The difference in sound in each channel meant that you could hear a fairly wide sounds synth. (very phat)
However, once I started applying distortion to the synths I noticed that the stereo image quickly deteriorated away. Typically I will use ableton's amp or vinyl distortion units. Sometimes ohmicide. Using amp for example made both synths pretty much mono.. each sitting very close to the center of the mix.
Has anyone experienced this and is there an obvious thing I am missing?

Re: Distortion and Stereo Images
Have you checked for phase issues and/or important frequency clashes between the two patches?

Re: Distortion and Stereo Images
no its not the patches.. its that once i apply the distortion modules it loses the stereo image
like say i have a drum rack just playing a hihat panned 50L (all the way to the left).. I see and hear the sound playing all the way only on the left speaker. However if I add in an amp module it becomes almost completely mono..

Re: Distortion and Stereo Images
what about with vinyl distortion.. there doesn't appear to be a similar option there
Re: Distortion and Stereo Images
Make sure you select Stereo instead of Mono in the Pinch section. Shouldn't do anything strange.

Re: Distortion and Stereo Images
nah its already selected. but when you raise the little circle on the top part or the bottom it goes from stereo to mono.. or at least the panning becomes lost
Re: Distortion and Stereo Images
Yeah, just lower the Drive if that is too extreme. It would be probably due to frequencies overlapping from the waveshapers or something.

Re: Distortion and Stereo Images
You can always put in a 'utility' and play around with the stereo width of the sound with that.
