Before I knew anything about dj'ing or the typical song structures for electronic, I would wonder how come there were no solo sections in any of the tunes I'd heard. When I first started producing I was like "dude, I'm gonna add wobble solos to dubstep! yeaahhhhhh" hahahahawub wrote:

Think of that....but at 140

...Also (since this is offtopic thread

That's cool, I just love that little box so I always write too much about it. I'm sure the Moog wouldn't be a bad source for your reeses either. How cheap is a slim phatty where you are? Because they are almost twice as much as a Mopho in my part of the world. If you want some saw wave samples from the Mopho, let me know what exactly would be useful and I'll upload them for you.Hircine wrote:Yeah, tbh, I just wanted a good base source for my reeses, something with a nice and colourful low end, that can be overdrived for analog low end distortion, shit like that, simple with two oscillators. Then process those with Kontakt (and maybe an e-mu in the futurefragments wrote:Oh man. The Mopho is a beast. The saw waves are beautiful. They are raw, but rich. I don't know how to describe them exactly. If you make bass music the Mopho is a sound investment--the Curtis Lowpass filter on it is raw, in a very, very good way. The feedback distortion is OK, but it's hard to find a sweetspot about half the time--it always sounds a little too much or too little to my ear. There are lots of internal modulation options and the menu diving to program isn't bad at all. With four assignable knobs you can do all the live tweaking you want. You can also input sounds into it to use the filter--this feature is mono...but who cares? It sounds great. I got mine for 265 USD, probably one of the best deals I've ever gotten. I do usually do post processing if I'm going for a twisted reese or something like that. But you can go pretty far internally, it just doesn't have any effects.Hircine wrote:Malstrom should be a VST2/AU.
Fragments, how are the Mopho's saw waves?) I'm considering getting one or a slim phatty, those are relatively "cheap" over here.

There are two types of producers, those who are passionate about music and want to make good music, and those that think electronic music is 'cool' and want to be famous.fragments wrote:You think people would really give up if Massive was somehow taken from them? I feel like if you took my favorite tools away I'd find other ways to make music, but a lot of folks seem really flighty about making music, I question their motives.
Massive caters more to the latter IMO. If it was suddenly taken away, I doubt half the jaunty cap & vest brigade would suddenly get involved with learning Synth1 or Reaktor.

Yeah, they're quite interchangeable. The Doors/Hendrix would be psychedelic rock, Grateful Dead would be psychedelic, Deep Purple/Floyd would be prog...but there is a lot of overlap.Artie Fufkin wrote:Before I knew anything about dj'ing or the typical song structures for electronic, I would wonder how come there were no solo sections in any of the tunes I'd heard. That's the beauty of synthesis imo.
You can do loads with massive and a youtube vid but the moment you understand synthesis and realize that it is not synth specific, the world is your oyster.

No denying that, but the people who produce for InstaFame...would they sit down and learn if Massive was suddenly taken away?Electric_Head wrote:That's the beauty of synthesis imo.

I didn't phrase my statement correctly.
I was fully agreeing with you.

If it wasn't massive it would be some other over-wrought vsti, I remember it used to be Albino that all the kids loved because Rusko/benga etc used it didn't they?

I fucking wish that one of the early Dubstep production Masterclasses someone like Benga or Rusko had come out and been like, yeah we use a ProTools rig

Pretty much.
It's the same in other genres.
PsyTrance used to be all ReFX Vanguard.
And Lin Plug Chronox.
And of course Albino.
And then all of a sudden Nexus was released and all the kiddies thought they were psytrance producers.

Vanguard is a beast, can get some stupid arps and pads out of that thing.

It is still a very good synth.
Gladiator is the successor and is equally cool.
Vanguard was just so simple and effective.
Gladiator's arp is great imo.
Specifically the key changes you can specify creates some very good sounding melodies.

Just gotta pop in and ask, you lot talking about psychedelic music, have you ever listened to it under the influence of psychedelics? The clue is in the name, it's not about what instruments you use or if you emulate tape compression from the 60's or whatever. It's all about the drugs. You cannot even begin to fathom the genre otherwise.
Not to shoot you down or anything, sure you could make dubstep using elements from old psychedelic rock/funk/whatever, but it just wouldn't be 'psychedelic' unless you've experienced that kind of music while tripping. Your whole perception of music changes dramatically.

Though that's not to say that once the mindset is in place, that the above techniques wouldn't make more sense.

^this
I have experienced it all on psychedelics which gave me the grounding to produce psychedelic music.
Mindset as wub says.

That being said, once I get the extra bits of hardware at the end of the month and get everything rigged up, I do intend to indulge whilst twisting knobs randomly and recording the output

ive done that before... its loads of fun

That's probably, sadly, very true. I just hope to dream, ya know?wub wrote:There are two types of producers, those who are passionate about music and want to make good music, and those that think electronic music is 'cool' and want to be famous.fragments wrote:You think people would really give up if Massive was somehow taken from them? @Listening to psychedelic rock on psychedelics: I have done that and understand what you mean, but the way the music was created still matters--listening to Frank Sinatra or Beethoven on LSD I'm sure could be mind blowing or terrifying. I've listened to all kinds of music on psychedelics--music inspired by them was my reason for trying 'em. Those artists had their own psychedelic experiences and translated it into music, so having experienced that helps us understand the music. But once one has had that experience, I think it's possible to create something psychedelic while sober.

similarly to Wub's idea of build your drums around the rest of the track, recently I've been programming my hats before my kicks and snares. the idea is that if your can get a nice groove with out them, then it should be very nice with them..so far I've had pretty good success
