An even mix...

Post by cracktactics » Fri Aug 24, 2007 6:50 pm

I'm quite new to mixing, so i have a few things i havent figured out, but the biggest is that when i have a very low frequency bass, in the mix, the instruments with higher frequencies like piano and guitar, get quieter while the bass is playing, which sounds really bad. Can anyone tell me what im doing wrong and how to solve it?

Are you putting a low pass filter on your bass?

Have you tried adjusting the level of your bass?

Is there a compressor on your output? It sounds like it's a combination of unruly bass firing off a 2 bus compressor, to me.

Like skavoovie_blind9 says, take some of the lows out of the bass. You probably can't hear them, but they're robbing you of headroom.

I've put a lowpass filter on and its a little better so thanks for that, but now the piano is wobbling in the same way as the bass and it still gets quieter as the bass is playing...

sounds like you have a compressor on the master bus, and have your bass channel turned up far too loud.

...or less than great speakers, which can have the same effect. But yeah, the bass being too loud is the main cause.

By the way, they mean a hi-pass filter. You want to roll off the frequencies below 30Hz or so, use your ears. They don't contribute anything to the sound.
