What are these guys doing (mixing?)

Post by beefcake187 » Fri Jan 11, 2013 12:10 am

Moderators please move this to the correct sub-forum if this isnt the place... and if this is not the forum for questions like this, remove it and PM me.

Good example @ 7 min. mark

I love the first set in this vid, the first 2 guys Nightmare & Oni (not sure which is which).

I watch the video and Im trying to observe as much as I can, are they simply very good DJs? Are the tracks all full tracks from other artists that they play and then mix in either parts of another full track, or adding/adjusting effects on the center mixing board?

Honestly I dont even know what to google to find out how to do that either virtually or some day with a setup like that (or similar in function). Looks like a ton of fun and this town needs some fresh beats at the clubs. The clubs here are ok but they play shit music and its not as conducive to dance as dubstep or similar genres of electronic music. Now the raves that pop up now and again... HUGE. Several DJs, lots of dancers, great beats, 2500 ppl at the last one held at the swamp buggy tracks.

But really I just want to know what those guys are doing, what google terms (I need a computer music/DJ/mixing lexicon) I should search, and can I do this with software and a MIDI controller? I dont even really know how those mixing boards work (or what they do) other than blend one track to the next to keep the beats flowing.

Looks like a blast.

They're just teasing 2 tunes that are locked together bpm wise with each other with quick cuts on the volume faders for like a bar.

I barely understand what you said but if I wanted to learn more, is that just basic DJ skills? Could I do that in Ableton with 2 tracks and use my midi controller for the faders using either the knobs or pads? Thanks a lot!

yes...sync up two tracks...cut between the two with the fader. plenty of good videos on youtube if you want to get an idea of what's going on.

Thank you thank you thank you!

So there are like 4 billion DJ videos on youtube. Should I just start with basic ableton dj tutorial or is this a specific style of DJ-ing these guys are doing? Any specific key words I should use to find the right material? I just dont want to go down this path again-

*When I started learning Ableton I spent 2 days on these tutorials that were a total waste and tought me nothing about what I want to do both mixing like these guys ^ or creating my own dubstep track. Kind of a bummer when you waste that much time. Im out of work so when Im not looking for work Im on the computer watching vids, reading blogs/articles/tutorials, anything.

It's just basic mixing. Once you have two tracks beatmatched together keep the crossfader in the center. Keep the volume fader one track A at 0, track B at 100. When you want to tease a bar of the other track just do a quick invert of that.

OK I know how to set my midi controller to operate the cross-fader and understand the volume part, are the terms "tease a bar" (assuming 1 bar of music) and "invert" pretty standard terms? I wish there was a DJ/mixing/dubstep dictionary!

Thanks thanks thanks!!!

Invert means do the opposite, so go from 0 volume on track A and 100 volume on track B, to 100 volume on track A to 0 volume on track B, you are correct with teasing a bar meaning 1 bar of music.

Right on. Cool. Thanks a bunch man, you probably saved me a day of banging my head on the midi pads! :4:

So basically they are fading from 1 track to another (I assume very quickly, or instantly) for 1 bar and then back to original track... and because they know there music they know when to do it and what its going to sound like etc... is that close?

Why is Ableton the first thing people think of when seeing dj's though?

There are no discs being jockeyed.

i agree unreservedly. it should so much be "Buyer Understander Mixer Matcher of Electronic Recordings". much better abbreviation for most of the laptop jockeys

oops and to stay so much on the topic. my friend, you should practice with your equipments. make many mistakes and learn. if the friend figures out on the friends own with the hand and ear exploration and this WILL BE SO much the best path

Definitely, don't know what the fuck he's on about though :)

Just to clarify this already so clear thread, djing in ableton is wack as bird poo.

Nice. Thanks. I wondered who was who. Nightmare seems a lot more active, and I dont know if its just watching how hes really getting into it that makes his stuff sound just a little better than the other or if he really is a notch above. My buddy said the same thing when I sent him the vid. Wanted to know who the guy was with the Yankees hat and gold sticker.
