Yeah from what I've seen it looks pretty nice, I'd say it gives a different sound from the vocodex though, which I feel is a little warmer. Gets a bit muddy sometimes though, it takes away a lot of highs so I usually split my frequencies cause of that. Don't have too much experience with the ableton one though so can't say for sure.OfficialDAPT wrote: The ableton stock vocoder seems to work pretty well although I don't have anything to compare it to.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
I find that whenever I use the vocoder in Ableton I end up loosing some of the dynamics that define the growl. Idk, maybe I just am not able to utilize it properly. However I do find that frequency splitting and/or mixing in a second instance of the same growl with a stock Ableton phaser on it can be a really good way to get some definition. But for that I very specifically modulate the frequency and feedback values to suit the particular growl's movement. Also crank that envelope all the way down. Here's an example from a track I'm currently working on; would be happy to talk more about the growls if anyone's interested:Maxxan wrote:Yeah from what I've seen it looks pretty nice, I'd say it gives a different sound from the vocodex though, which I feel is a little warmer. **Note: The growls are kinda "hidden" since I have yet to finish this, meaning missing parts, no mixing or EQing, etc.**
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Some nice growls happening in this one. I'm cool with giving info, I'm not posting screenshots though, that would be a waste of time and effort.

haha the new release quality test: can you make growl basses?Sure_Fire wrote:Fuck I need to release an EP

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Some nice growls in there sure_fire, i like the "rooooi" sounds that feauture early on.
I'd let the track breathe though - that waveform is so fat haha, its just constant sound and gets a little fatigueing.
This latest thing I've been making has some growlesque sounds, but they're kind of just midrangey stuff opposed to proper vocal growls.

Sick shit dude, i would love to be pointed in the direction for how you made those really mid-y growls at like 53-56, been trying to make some shit like that for a whileSure_Fire wrote:Some nice growls happening in this one. Also to contribute to the thread, i made this growlly bass today resampling a bunch of filter sweeps in WOW over a wacky ass patch i made in FM8, then rendered out a bunch of different variations, loaded them into abletons sampler, plugged in some random notes and then adjusted the sample start until it sounded cool. will go into more detail if anyone's interested
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8645029/growliewowlie.wav
also as a fun fact. there is no distortion at all added to this bass or in FM8 besides turning up the overdrive in WOW slightly
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Agreed, that "Roii" sound is very interesting. It has a lot of definition and character, please explain how that particular sound is made if possible. Thanks. Cool track as wellSure_Fire wrote:Some nice growls happening in this one. I'm cool with giving info, I'm not posting screenshots though, that would be a waste of time and effort.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
surefire's bass sounds are legit. There is one spot that sounds remarkably like something from "in for the kill"
nice work dude!

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Holy shit surefire, that was tits. The first growl has such amazing low end, really clean and warm. Really well done man. Awesome melodies too

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Dunno if this counts as growls but I talk my growl theory and applied it elsewhere. Basically used chopped segments of growlish synths as sort of warped wooshing noises in a percussive manner. Def not a dubstep growl but I wonder if ppl can tell if it has the same root design.
didn't know how to link to the correct time but the sounds are roughly around 19 seconds in

What you guys think of the growls on the last song that i did using massive. They start at the drop at 0.59 into the song.I tried to something different than a Yoi etc

Updated my squelchy growls:

@rockonin: Not a fan of the stuff on the drop, like the ones at 1:10 ish - the ones on the drop need more weight.
@Subflex: I like the vocal quality but again I think you need more weight or maybe modulation from filter sweeps.

mthr-guy
that was sick! very pro sounding imo well done song and structure and whatever so yeah!!
um it might just be me but i feel like it would sound cooler if you took some stuff OUT of it. sounds a bit too busy with too much release on certain things (thinking of dub sounds, snares)... to soaked and effected so they take away from the rawness of the kick and bass sounds
then again my dubstep track are always ridiculously barron to the point where they sound empty.. but still i think you could widdle it down a bit

Thanks guys
@Neon: I get what you mean, I've aready taken some other synths out - think I might remove the guitar skanks from the drop since they're just in the background and push the main lead harder. Also I think I might manually tweak some of the volumes of the midrange to prevent them bleeding together - hopefully to get a cleaner sounding track.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Basically, I like to take my reese, take the squealchy high off and add a more deep osc. Also slap some vocoder down on it.
Making a mouth shape eq, and modulate the two peaks to almost touch. I'll go further in depth when i get home
