Re: To what extent do you guys use sample packs?
I use samples for all my drums and vocal stabs/chants, etc. I usually load in all my drums to individual audio tracks, tune them with a spectrum analyser, EQ and resample and rinse and repeat until I'm happy. I must say though, Vengeance crashes and open hats sound awful. Nowhere near as good as the stock Ableton hits.
In fact I think the Ableton cymbals and percussion hits are top flight. Get a nice open hat > high pass > chorus (only like 20% dry/wet) and some slight panning is beautiful. Anyone else prefer the Ableton percussion (not actual drums) and cymbals to sample packs? After some messing about they sit in a mix so well.

Re: To what extent do you guys use sample packs?
I use tons of samples. I have folders full of drum and percussion loops. I make extensive use of them if I feel they work with the track. A lot of times I like specific pieces of different loops and I'll cut those and sort of glue them together. Generally I make a very minimal beat using one shots just to have something to work with and then lay the glued pieces over that.
For musical and bass loops it's a little different. I make use of them if I happen to find some cool ones. Sometimes they require a lot of manipulation, other times they just need a few effects to compliment them a bit.

I honestly don't make a distinction between when I use samples and when I don't. It's whatever sounds good and I'll try anything to see if it sounds good with what I'm doing. I always use samples for drums though, sometimes from pre-made loops layered and cut up and processed e.t.c. Quite often I'll look for interesting sounds in my sample collection and add a load of effects to it or otherwise mangle it in any number of ways e.t.c. I'd say all my tunes are fairly balanced between synthesis and sampling with a load of effects added on both sides.

Hahaha yeah I think so man. Even the 'bright tunnel' bit (I thiiiink, not sure). The 'laziness' kept it sparse and dark, though. Probably kept jungle from going all out 'happy hardcore with mashed up breaks'.hasezwei wrote:wub wrote:Beat me to itGenevieve wrote:hasezwei wrote:but just stacking a premade drumloop, one or two percussion loops, a pad and a synth with some risers all from the same samplepack together... thats not your tune, just a demo for that samplepack

I just use them for my drums and FX. The less samples you use the more original your tunes will be.

yea that surely applies to all the generic brostep house trance moombah lazer trap "EDM" shit out there with the same fucking 10 FMassive8 presets on each tuneItalus wrote:I just use them for my drums and FX. The less samples you use the more original your tunes will be.
all synth, all plastic, all shit.
i think i prefer a crusty old hip hop beat to that, even if it's 100% samples.
Re: To what extent do you guys use sample packs?
I just thought of someone using shitty vengeance samples. If you sample from like an old vinyl or something, then it's all good.hasezwei wrote:yea that surely applies to all the generic brostep house trance moombah lazer trap "EDM" shit out there with the same fucking 10 FMassive8 presets on each tuneItalus wrote:I just use them for my drums and FX. I can spot scrap yard, modern talking, carbon, lunacy/cicada reeses, massives performer, and your standard FM8 growl a lot faster than I can tell any vengeance samples someone is using. Use whatever you want, but saying synths (when everyone uses the same ones) will somehow make your tunes more original is jokes. Who cares about 'originality' anyway, just make good musicItalus wrote:I just thought of someone using shitty vengeance samples. Originality is what makes good music. Also let me correct myself, the less generic samples you use the more original your tunes will be.*Huts wrote:I can spot scrap yard, modern talking, carbon, lunacy/cicada reeses, massives performer, and your standard FM8 growl a lot faster than I can tell any vengeance samples someone is using. And what does this have to do with synths? I never even brought them up. You have the choice to make different sounding things, its not like everybody is forced to use modern talking and scrap yard.
