Never mind what a freak occurrence a ray barb to the heart is, if he was acting anything like usual, he was probably annoying the animal.

It's not like he just fucked with them for the hell of it, he saved a lot of animals lives. Sure, they don't like being messed with and would rather be left alone in bad environment than be bothered by humans (blindfolded, tackled down, carried, etc.) but at the end of the day he got a lot of crocs into better habitats. That's like justifying a man shooting a doctor because he doesn't like his balls being felt up.

While he may have been technically "bothering" the animal, he gave them a better quality of life that they didn't really understand. No need to be so disrespectful about it.

while ultimately, that may be true, it doesn't detract from my reasoning for an animal will not distinguish between the two: it will only realise its annoyance and not that it is being treated that way for a greater good. handling animals for x-years, Irwin could (should) know the risks (I think he did). I don't think that saying "he had it coming" is that far from a scientific and statistical truth rather than dis-respectfulness.
