I recently read a Dutch article that said that venues are making fuck all these days because musicians are asking for increasingly high fees. Ticket prices haven't gone up, though. And venues are struggling to stay open. Gotta make all their money off of drinks now.

I thoguht this much when I used to work at a venue where they had to let mad people go too.

This can only go on for much longer tbh. I think pretty soon, "musician" won't be viable career for anyone but the top earners.

Yeah that's kind of what i'm saying, in a few generations kids won't have an attachment to CDs or DVDs (not really talking about vinyl cos there will always be people who wanna collect them) so why would they bother going to a shop and buying a weird plastic disk when they can stay on their computers and within a few clicks have the newest film?

Do they sell records in HMV? Not in my local stores they don't.

Picked up the pacific boxset for £15 today. Really feel for the staff having to deal with aggravated customers before being kicked out of a job.

Who's to say CD's won't become collectable in the future? Don't think a lot of people buying vinyl now (myself included) had much of an attachment to it a few years ago.

Only in the big ones. They have a decent selection though, saw Skream's Tapped in one back in 2011

Fair point but i don't really think they have the same allure, you can't see them spinning, less tactile and are really cheap to produce.

How the hell did Blockbuster even last this long? It seems even less relevant in the internet age than HMV.

I work in the flagship HMV store in Ireland and today we went into receivership. Basically, I got a call saying not to come into work tomorrow and they are unsure if i'll get paid for the hours I worked over Christmas (that includes a 9am shift boxing day and a 10am shift new years day). Never mind a redundancy. Fuck HMV and fuck trevor moore. If any here are working for them in the UK I suggest you get out now, your gonna be working for free for the next few weeks and then getting shafted like us.

Jesus. Doesn't sound like it. I'd get writing to whoever they've gone into administration with RIGHT NOW. It's often first come first served on this sort of shit and they definitely owe you something if you've worked there for a while on a permanent basis. Horrible. :(

did you get redundancy?
Nothing, they're keeping us in the dark at the moment. Technically im still employed by them, but they are sending me out a form so I can get job seekers allowance, which means fuck all to me because im a full time student so i don't qualify for it.

I think they are being so vague with us so that we dont storm the shops and fuck bricks through the shop windows looking for the money the owe us.

As far as I know im gonna have to go through the state to get my redundancy.

Sure HMV Ireland where part of a charity to help raise money for a poor young girl with a rare form of cancer for her operatoin, and now they dont know if they will give her that money. link: http://www.herald.ie/news/lily-mae-4-ca ... 55319.html

But they knew this was coming, the same CEO in place of HMV now was CEO of Jessops and thats now in administration too. They seen this coming months ago but kept the staff and public in the dark.

Simon fox the old CEO seen it coming miles away, before him and the former financial director left at the same time he had this to say. "I am proud to be leaving HMV with a profitable future secured" - Simon Fox, CEO, August 2012. He also gave himself a 50% pay rise in early 2011, from £579,000 to £874,000 and his golden handshake in September was rumoured to be £498,000......fucking disgraceful!!!!

Its the normal Joe like me who actually needs the few quid I work hard for that gets mugged off. These fat cats have more than enough to live comfortably for the rest of their horrible little years.

that's shady as fuck, whole situation's a mess. real victims are workers like you who've been completely fucked about, not people who've lost a few quid on gift cards (though obviously that's also fucking shit)
