Re: How does my kick/snare sound?

Parallel compress the drums as a group and use a reverb send on individual channels in light amounts. Try Sausage Fattener on the kick and camel crusher on the snare a bit.

mthrfnk - good vibes, i couldnt really tell what the vocal sample before the drop. ive never heard such positive vibes from a dubstep tune! that girl singing goes off key in the first bit, rest sounds good though. great production !

dot currency - awesome rain and thunder samples, he drums could use some transient shaping or parrallel compression as the midrange is kind of sucking them up. a short wip so cant really say much but a great start!

efrafa11 - love these drums and that pad in the back round! i think the drums could use a more pronounced kick. or something to drive the beat a bit more, i understand the "off time" thing you were going for and it works great, but something driving them harder would sound good, great atmosphere solid tune so far!!

this is one of the darker tunes ive made, i like to think of my style as a mix of burial atmospheric soundscapes, with some gnarly sound design thrown in as well. i know the mixdown sounds crap as i used audacitys "leveler" to bring the volume up, but some feedback on the sound of the track as a whole would be appreciated!

cmgoodman1226 wrote:@npcompl33t: Not a bad idea. That little arp type thing that comes in later on sounds a bit cheesey. All in all it needs a bit of tidying up b/c right now it sounds a bit messy and muddy. That's all I can really think of at the moment.

@ballin: First thing is that white noise is really fatiguing on the ears. You need to tone down some of that really high top end. Also the bass and mids really drown out the drums when they're playing. Bring them out a lot more. Use more variation in your cymbals. All I can hear is this obnoxiously high ride cymbal. I'd take out that "bass" at the drop as it has nothing to do with the lyrics and vox that go on throughout the rest of the song. The melody itself isn't bad, but it's also not awe inspiring. I'd focus on toning down those highs and bringing out the drums.

@acidrat: It sounds like you were going for a chaotic sound and it really just sounds disjointed and random. I like the drums. I like a lot of the sounds but that droning pad in the background is taking up a lot of breathing room for everything else. And then you just sort of go into the ending which sounds like a completely different song. In all honesty I would turn that last little bit and use it in a different song.

Anyways, here's mine. It's slowed down at about 106, I'm probably gunna speed it up a bit. Anyways it doesn't have an ending yet but I'd like to get peoples' thoughts on it thus far.

Love this tempo. Great sounds, really like the atmosphere. I'm kind of a noob so Im not gonna try and give any technical advice but keep going I want to hear this finished.

kreutzbube wrote:@cmgoodman1226: i dont like the hats, sound a bit piercing... dont know anything else to say, quite good production.

@mtl6: nice drums and this subtle little vocal is perfect. overall sounds like a very solid production. the melody itself and melodys rhythm sound completely uninteresting. twist it, chop it, do something with it.

@CYRHEN: sounds very unbalanced and bad from any perspective... mixing, arrangement, sounddesign, composition and so forth. for one month this is quite agreeable and good, you show interesting ideas you can work on. due to the raw mix and the hilariously crazy sounds every newbie to production comes along with i still think this is more interesting than ur common wobble-drop-type dubstep, which i assume u want to create(?).

a little draft i've made, i don't know yet wether i want to finish it :)

cabre wrote:Kongret- your tune 'fear' is very precisely made my man! It may not be my sort of thing, per say, but the lead-ups and drops are very on point. I dig the soft synth bridge in the middle and end, probably my favorite part of the tune. I would probably add more variation within the heavy bass, probably using maybe a lower-end cut giving it that guttoral feel, you know? But none the less, awesome.

Mthrfnk- on 'drop whip' Digging the change up in the drums after the first drop, like I say with alot of dubstep tunes, it needs variations in bass and synthwork, but I was kinda impressed with the heavy bass drop to begin with. Kind of Doctor P esque, I can enjoy that.

DAPT- I love the simplistic drumline man, and the guitarparts are a really nice and original backup for the heavy bass. The way they both meshed was a nice surprise. I also love how in your drops the heavy bassnotes carry off and become more apparent on those longer notes. This is the shit I DO like, keep it up man. Followed!

I have two wips im currently working on, if any of you fellow mellow and minimalistic bassheads wanna take a listen, it would be GREATLAY APPRECIATAYD thanks brohizzles

Wow man. I wish I could make drums like that. Seriously I'm way jealous. Pretty awesome. I wish I had more input, keep it up!

@RATCUB Right, the mixdown is the main problem that I can hear 'cause most of the ideas and synths are pretty good. The drums just aren't doing it for me. The kick needs more low end presence and I think the snare needs more high end presence and probably a bit of reverb. Not that bad otherwise. Keep it up.

@RandoRando Ahhh, I'm not good with this style so take all my feedback with a pinch/handful of salt. I would have the kick hitting just a little harder, maybe use some compression. I honestly can't give you any more than that. Sorry... :/

@Efrafa11 I like that intro. Drums sound really nice on this. I think it needs a bit more sub, either that or my speakers just aren't picking it up. Nice evolving pad, I would very slightly boost the high end. Sounds good bro.

Okay, so my drums were probably the main focus for this, especially the snare. Tear me apart.

you should do some cleanup. start out with highpassfiltering everything except ur kickdrum and bassline to around 200hz. next i would try to bring up the snare somewhere between 2khz and 8khz and the lazergun-sound between 0.5khz-2.5khz. just try how it fits best. HPFing ur kicks & subs to around 30hz can help u regain some headroom as well.

@RandoRando
Sounds Evil overall a dark tone. But I think It Really lacks punch in the drums. Making it a little flat.

RATCUB

viHey you said to be mean haha.
Dude those drums sound so forward in the mix. and your synths are too much panned and in your face.
You should put the drums more upfront.
They get lost ;)

mthrfnk

As Always your tracks are so well builded.
I like a lot the idea of the track flows so nice.

Living_Tragedy

hats are ok. Kick and snare need to punch more :) I like the drop, fix drums there too.

here's a little hook I'm working on. I'm inspired by kriptic minds lately. The Track needs some more darkish background plucks.

Nice the pinball track. Has a nice groove.
Very very nice clean vocals.
How did you get the bass sound? sine + slight underneath saws all saturated?

I updated the track, still trying to figure out the drums, any advice on how to "bring them to the front?" I think that kicks are getting lost.

Rat your kicks are getting lost because the drums are overcompressed and your synths not.
The Overall Mix is overcompressed by 4 or 5 dbrms. Lower the limiter
compression and limiting in the right amount can help to glue your elements together and make em not jump directly into your face, So to come back at the point the drums sound distant because they are overcompressed and they lost their attack transients. the synth in this way at the moment you raise the volume to hear the track at good levels it hits you in the forehead.
I hope I've been clear. :) I'm a lil drunk

I think I saved over the project file and I took the previous version off soundcloud :/
Basically I equalized the kicks better, sped the tempo up and switched the beat up.
I think it's close to finished but it needs a hook element and maybe some transition tuning but I'm a n00b so any tips for that would be great. My beat always tend to have a very robotic stiff feel and I want to change that. That's why I'm here, I want to push myself and grow.
