What does electronic music need more/less of in 2013?

It tends to have a much more rigid rhythm than traditional funk

listen to a lot of the stuff prince made in the 80s and you will see what i mean

Prince rules. I love a lot of the 80s funk with synths and drum machines.

Difference is is that it still maintains groove and character. You can make mechanical music funky. There is a lot of house that is very funky. The difference between it and the Koan Sound attempt at being funky is the Koan Sound stuff is all on that super compressed, loud dynamically flat drums and then just playing cheesy "what people think funk is" type riffs on the synths every so often. Point is is that it's drastically missing out on the fact that funk comes from the groove, you can still be funky with 808s for drums if everything else rhythmically and dynamically plays to it in a way that creates that feeling of a groove.

For example this is very electronic but funky


It's to do with the general way the synth part skips about over the drums combined with the way the space between the loud kick and snare generates this kind of tension and release feel within the track that makes your head nod especially when combined with the hi hat being slightly off a lot. It makes feel a little more loose in a way that despite It all being electronic projects thefeeling of how you feel when you're jamming something that's real funky on a more traditional instrument to it.

yeah the drums in that fox tune (or the other one) are admittedly not that good but i like a lot of the synth work.. I just made a passing comment on it's resemblance to new-funk (in my opinion) and everyone started going on about why it's not funk n this n that

All I was trying to say is that to me it has absolutely nothing in common with the more electronic synth heavy funk to my ears and just sounds like Skrillex with funk cliches thrown in. It aesthetically, rhythmically and also just in general attitude regarding production is pretty much polar to what I get from actually funky records. I just think it sounds fake and awkward and really just actively feels un-dancable. To me the funk comes in when it has that feeling in it that makes you want to dance. Koan sound just lacks that thing that locks you into it. It feels flat to my ears

Ok so we've established that KOAN Sound aren't the new Parliament/Funkadelic, good talk guys. I understand where you're coming from Wolf, but none of that stops takes away from it just being well-produced, fun, memorable music in my eyes. Some of my favourite albums include D'Angelo - Voodoo, James Brown - In The Jungle Groove and Parliament - The Mothership Connection, and I could compare KOAN Sound's take on funk to them and of course it wouldn't hold up, but what would be the point? Unless something's directly trying to take on something that already exists, why make unfair comparisons? KOAN Sound do what they do well, people dance to it even if you can't, and that's all that really matters to me.

I mean really, do you really hear something like this and decide that serious analysis and historical comparisons are the best ways to approach it? Lighten up mate.

Sounds like fucking advert music and like it was made by people who spend all their day trying to make their snares obnoxiously punchy instead of actually enjoying music.

I feel awkward just listening to it. I actually couldn't dance to it unless I was doing it sarcastically to emphasise how rhythmically laboured and dumb it sounds.

also I don't understand when people say something has tight production or something of that nature. Okay you're track has no dirt but it's boring as fuck. Just, because everything lines up perfectly doesn't make it good. It's just a bunch of perfectionism that eventually leads to music with no fucking groove or funk.
