Big names who shun DSF.
After the downtime this weekend it was quite funny to see so many names piping up about how they were glad the place went down and it got me thinking about all the big name producers and djs who have passed through here at some point and now diss this place for whatever reason:
Joe Nice - Still a registered moderator. Maybe that's why the forum has been 'dead to me for ages'. God knows being a mod is painful task, but Joe seemed to consistently get mad love from everyone on the forum. Shame, I actually quite liked him a genuine good guy and passionate about the music.
Plasticman - LOL. If you haven't read his leaving thread, have a hunt it's worth a read. After realigning himself with the brostep audience to get gigs and that, he's lashed out many times on twitter and on the forum to state that everyone here are neckbeard nerds (whilst still promoing and selling products here).
Scuba - His loathing of this place is again fairly well documented, which at first I thought was a real shame. He was one of the first members and with Hotflush, genuinely carved a unique space and introduced me to artists like Distance and Toasty. I guess it's more indicative of his desire to be accepted by the berlin techno audience that he now shuns the name dubstep and the forum.
Who else is there? Is it just the change from only having 300 people on the forum to the 60k there is now. Or is it more? As artists get more exposure, more people talk about them and you inevitably read bad things (usually written by illiterate people). That can taint a persons view of a place. Scuba is one of the most miserable people in music I have met (only a few of times, I'm sure it was a bad day for him on all of them), but it's not hard to see/read/understand his disappointment in what Dubstep has been changed into, regardless of how much good stuff there still is. There's always a recurring theme of the loudest most obnoxious members leaving the biggest impression and that's a shame also, considering how many nice people, good events and laughs I have had access to here. But you are left wondering why...
What's also interesting is how some producers deliberately avoid the forum altogether, Addisson Groove/Headhunter doesn't like reading stuff about himself and avoids reading stuff on here. As a result he was completely unaware of the abundant outpouring of love he gets here.

This geezer 'pon Facebook:

Why the f*** should they keep paying for the domain name? Dubstep has stepped aside for moombahton and trap. As well the only posts on dsf were pissing contests over who had the best (lame, horrible, insecure and weak) talking bass sound. Just like gearslutz, the only thing going on was a bunch of non-professionals arguing about things they had no knowledge of. Dubstep forum hasn't been respected or treated well for years. I say let the chips fall where they may. F*** trolling.

My name is Dom and I like making ambientish music and drinking tea. Nice to meet you.

Who was that? Do people still play Moombahton, wasn't that fashionable with american uni jocks for like 4 months?! Either way I agree with him about the trolling, worst aspect of this site.

Re: Big names who shun DSF.
imho it's sad as fuck.
Out to Pete for wording it like I wanted to
! Especially Joe Nice made me sad... If it wasn't for this dead forum I would have never even listened to the man.
Don't get what they accomplish by twittering it, what's in it? Next level of coolness because a music forum people still relate to/are interested in isn't your cup of tea anymore?
there's so many other things I want to say but can't find the wording, I'm sure one of you will find them and I'll just quote and amen the fuck out of it (looking at garethom/fractal etc)
but oh wait no Scuba was first on DSF all hail the man right :')

Re: Big names who shun DSF.
Funny how some of the big names still frequent this place and in fact enjoy a bit of trolling themselves.

Re: Big names who shun DSF.
I don't know. I would never talk about anything DSF over social media and stuff.
But that's just because people will get the wrong (Skrillexy) idea.
People don't understand what 'we' built up here. Or will just turn the other cheek when they see the quite obvious domain name.
In my opinion, especially the snh is an interesting forum to be a part of and most of all it's fun.
It's like these guys think that we believe we are the authority on dubstep (because of the name). I don't have twitter or follow any of
these people though, so haven't seen it first hand.

Re: Big names who shun DSF.
It is what it is- an internet forum for people to post opinions....to hate that is like hating the internet, or people's opinions. Pretty easy to just come on here to listen to the SNH dubs/mixes threads or ask questions/help in the production forum. No need to get into endless brostep arguments if you don't want to.
If someone gets big enough that they spend all their time producing and touring and talking about music and have their own website/promoters doing their promo then I can see why they wouldn't need forums and might get pissed off over people giving them negative feedback on them when usually they just get fans and interviewers sucking up.
Scuba has always been a moody git as far as I can tell. Plastician just got moody because people openly criticised him- 'how dare you, don't you know who I am'!!

Re: Big names who shun DSF.
It's because the scene has changed in a huge way, it's no longer a tight knit community where all of the big producers and people that have been there from the start.
They don't like how a bunch of new people have came along and ruined their community and completely changed it. Now they no longer want to be part of it.

Saw your tweet about buying up the domain name, made me laugh. I actually tried to. FOR THE GOOD OF THE FORUM, I WOULD HAVE RETURNED IT TO DUBWAY.

I guess the domain name just wasn't set to auto renew, so the expiry date passed and the domain was redirected until renewed. I'm not involved with the owning/hosting of the site though.

Re: Big names who shun DSF.
Wasn't Ikonika really sick of this place? And FlyLo (was he even a member?).
The egos, rrly. They probably take themselves and this place a lil' too seriously. There's a lot of shit talking here though. But not just about the musicians, we talk mad shit about each other and everything. If they can't see it or take it, they probably think they should be above it.
If you do something and get it out there and push it for a lot of people to hear, you really gotta be prepared to take criticisms, lying and hate.

Re: Big names who shun DSF.
I do vaguely remember something about FlyLo, which is actually insane as I think he gets pretty much universal love, I mean: http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=172592 !!!
Dunno about Ikonika, she used to post and promo her stuff here fairly regularly, profile says she's logged in fairly recently. Can't remember her slagging the place off tho. Pretty sure she got signed after messaging Kode9 through here.

Something equally depressing about seeing so many old now established heads now slag the place off is look at who there first 100 members were and how many of them still post:

Re: Big names who shun DSF.
Quest had a bit of a hissy fit in the Deep Medi thread
Thats from p79, I think he said more in the pages before if youre botheredquest wrote:jsml wrote:I kind of get the thing about criticism... but what's the harm in speculation?
And it seems like you could have used the energy it took to put down a group of people largely saying positive things about your music (is this bullshit too?) to actually confirm whether Can We Go Back is on Medi or not? Would remove the speculation.
Just sayin'.
first of all someone already said i tweeted it's coming on antisocial,
i appreciate the positive things, but that's not really what i'm about, that's not what i look for, the only reason i came to this thread is because i was having a discussion with someone about a tune, and they said it was getting criticised so i wanted to see what was said, speculation is bullshit because it doesn't change anything, the descisions are made, and the releases will come out when they come out, mala doesn't like to confirm things too early and tries to hold things down, i did not mean to step any positive thing that was said in this thread because i'm sure it's appreciated by all the artists on medi, but when an artist read's things where people say "i'm not going to buy this" or "this isn't as good as his last" it has a very negative effect on the mental aspect of their music, especially if they have put their hearts into it, then all of a sudden the start to second guess themselves, which leads to them not putting out things that are really what they want to do. i believe in simply letting things just happen, and take it's course, if u don't like it, all good, don't buy it, but don't compare, u don't have to SAY ur not buying it, it doesn't need to be advertised, i believe that music is a mission, NOT a competition, i speak and build from my heart and i can guarantee that u will never see me put out anything that doesn't come from my heart because i build for me and me only, everything else is a bonus.
so i'm sorry to anybody who was offended, but i can't type any other way than how i feel, and i do think it's all bullshit, just like mr i'm gonna roll my eyes and get a couple points up there thinks what i said was, it's all swings and roundabouts.
anyways keep supporting good music, the music u love, don't worry about what is not for u, there are many sides to artists, and ur not going to like all of them, just celebrate what u do like.
this is my last post as i have asked for my account to be deleted as there is nothing left for me here.
big up to all! and keep your medi deep! one love

Re: Big names who shun DSF.
I think some people take the internet far too seriously. "Big" names quitting and slagging off forums are just as irritating as forum regulars making I'm quitting this place threads, it's the same bullshit pseudo drama which belongs in high school.
It seems like the vast majority of people are mad their secret club is popular now.
That being said the forum has become a cesspool of digging through vast majorities of shitposts and trolling to find a decent topic, but that always comes about when more users come and people ignore the search function or anything besides the 1st page of a board.
Also nothing is more hilarious than someone slagging off this place and then advertising their latest releases, mixes, radio shows, events etc still.
Seems like some people need thicker skins when it comes to criticism and choose to build a protective bubble by deleting their accounts or slagging off things that have any negative critique of them.
We're not talking about 4chan style raids or people's comments costing artists sales or gigs (with the exception of j_j costing himself sales by being a tnuc), it's just like most forums, a handful of voices in an ocean of posts.
