Where are we going..?
Basically as the title states..
Where are you going with music?
What's the goal? What happens when you reach said goal?
How are we going to achieve it?
I'm a little in a rut right now as I'm wanting to leave the nest and venture off into the world alone.
With nothing more than a little bit of production knowledge, and a ideas..where can I go?
Schooling is too expensive..I don't want to live at my rents forever..I have no job (don't want to work at a FF joint)
Where is there to go? To do?
Should I stay here, learn, and try to become a 'famous' musician/producer and tour the world? (ha)
Should I work on other things i'm interested in such as..film, photography, digital designing, fashion?
I mean..I'm lost!
Sorry just had to rant a little and get some feedback from you all as well! Mods..technically..this is a technical series of questions..
Feel free to answer those questions above..i'm curious about where you see yourselves as well!

Re: Where are we going..?
I just finished a remix for a Nervo competition, different and it was quite interesting to do. Just sent that in and it's my first remix competition I've entered.
My goal is to tour...and blare my own music for a crowd that actually listens to my stuff. Would be so dope to see! When I reach my goal...i'd be content with life and make my parents happy/myself.
How am I achieving it? Staying in my house on a friday night...downloading sample packs and learning more about production while all my friends are out partying/drinking etc.
I have 3 HUGE choices in life right now...I either A. Move to Hawaii(where I was born) and just get a job and live the average work life...but be at an awesome place/weather/girls. B. Get a good job like T-Mobile selling phones...move out of my house..get a house with friends or a nice condo...get a girlfriend...work more on social life..have parties and invite girls to my casa...and be happy with the girl and friends. C. Ignore all social life...substitute that to only go to shows....part-time job/no job...tell myself I'm not wasting time("it's my college substitute") Keep learning/researching/talk about music/production/shows...."Perfect" my sound...keep making tunes...hopefully bust a Dillon Francis and become big in the next few months to a year...
I'm stuck between B & C....all my friends have girlfriends...doing college..and such. And I'm here posting on a music forum not doing shit :'(
Someone can give you all the tools that you need, but what will make you different than anyone else and help you succeed, are your personal talents, skills and inclinations. Not everyone is fit for this/and will make it somewhere...sadly.

Re: Where are we going..?
nothing & nowhere lately
I dj every few weekends with my buddies at parties/events we throw but i just play styles i listen to/shit that's fun rather than what i make or want to make
over the past two years or so since i've started taking production seriously i went through every stage you mentioned lol..
started out producing while i was in college livin off on my own.. learned on my free time but still party and have a social life and go to shows
then I moved home with my Ps and didn't have much a life except production and I learned so much and started going somewhere..
then I started djing and became friends with the people I dj and party with and stopped focusing on production so much, partied too much, and had to get a job
now I have a girlfriend whose house I live at 6/7 days of the week so production is tough. we're gonna be havin a babay at the end of summer so once we finally move in together and I have my studio at my disposal at all times I'm going to start taking my production more seriously again..
my dream is to play my music very loudly for thousands of people all over the world. not for the money or fame but for the natural high that must be, it's gotta be the best feeling in the world. I watched bassnectar's nye countdown for this year on youtube tonight and I want to be the one conducting that. there's just nothing else I'd rather do with my life
I just need to fix my living situation and set the time aside every night to make some progress and evolve my sound

Re: Where are we going..?
We make music because we love it. Not to make money from it.
I don't want to shit in your cereal, but that's the cold, hard truth.
Go to school. Get an education. And make music in your free time. If your lucky it will pan out. If not, then at least you have a backup plan.
Good luck.

Re: Where are we going..?
The ultimate goal for me is to become a sound designer for film/games. In the meantime work on music and hope it all kicks off.
As well as trying to start a career through owning and running a label. If it all falls through then I guess it's back to school. Trying it while I'm young and ill never have as much free time again in my life. Was always told to sell out my passion for a well paying job and good schooling. I'm either too young or too self-centered to care about that.
I don't like planning my future and strapping myself down to something I might potentially loathe. But who knows, I might feel the same way about music, all I know is that right now, I want to make music a career. And I don't think 4 years + thousands of dollars to go through school and learn what I already know is ideal.

>Currently it's just a hobby, I have a full time professional job which limits my production time, however I do try to do as much as I can each week. The aim for me is, if at all possible, to continue improving keeping this as a hobby unless an oppurtunity arises whereby it could become something more (which is unlikely heh). I use a fair amount of my income on music related stuff (monitors, pc, external stuff etc.) which I'm quite happy to keep doing and eventually it might lead somewhere, if not it's a nice hobby which is really pretty interesting.Gurnumsbug wrote:Basically as the title states..

>Ultimate goal (in a dream world) would be one of two situations, either a)taking on a sound designing role with some form of studio, starting at the bottom and working my way upto to actually working on creating/recording/mixing sounds and effects for tv/film/games or b)signing a good release to good/big label and using that as a platform for development.
>Just got to keep on practicing and improving hopefully, imo if you're good enough you'll get the attention you deserve, it's just long/hard road to getting there.
Re: Where are we going..?
The one goal I have music wise is to make music that I can look back on later and be proud of, anything else is extra

Re: Where are we going..?
I like teaching myself and learning new things.
Last year I started working on and developing a private server of a once popular MMORPG, which is no longer operating in Europe. I initially wanted to create ambient background music for the game so I downloaded live lite and a few free vsts.
I have since upgraded ableton, but still only use free vsts and spend my spare time between developing my game and music skills.
As to where I want to go? I don't know. A friend and myself have since started producing as a duo, and he has more ambition than I do. He expects to be gigging this year, where as I feel neither of us are ready.
I need to upgrade my hardware, and probably get some good software before we put our music out there.
I don't really want to be a famous producer or anything as I feel it would be soul destroying.

Re: Where are we going..?
to be able to make a living from my music, however what iv learned from getting my first release sorted is that no fucker does that anymore. there is not much money in tune sales these days at all
Re: Where are we going..?
never been good at life advice.. if it was me I'd cool myself, go for a pint chill, return to music - to much thinking puts limits on what you can do and achieve.

I didn't know how similar some of these answers are, and how close of a life we desire.
Keep these coming..I love reading how and what drives you guys!
Also cheers for the general life advice
I have a friend who is in IT..as a nerd myself I take pride in knowing that he believes I can also be in IT! I think i'm going to apply somewhere soon.

Also, people are taking it way too seriously. From what I've seen, the people who have fun and are the loudest.. get gigs
and tracks signed.
I'll have fun, but I draw the line at being an obnoxious bastard

Obviously there are exceptions.

i'd add "and make the most tracks" to that. output is key.AxeD wrote:This.hudson wrote:to the moon duh

Re: Where are we going..?
My goal is simply to make music that I can absolutely rock the fuck out to. Dancing(skanking pretty much) to my own music makes me feel much more happier than my favorite songs by other producers and artist ever will.
Having lots of other people enjoy my music & going to shows is just a very nice, big bonus imo
And yeah, I stay in EVERY weekend. No girlfriend, maybe like 6 close friends (all with girlfriends), and thats it.
And I justify my social life with (or lack thereof): If you practice, you get better
If you get better, you play better music
If you play better music, you have more fun
If you have fun, you want to practice more
If you practice more, you get better...

travel back in time and get on the i robots compilation later so i have a goal to go back in time again
Re: Where are we going..?
Once time travel is invented and functional, how will the inventor keep other people from going back in time and inventing it first, given that he intends to allow the public to use his technology (for a profit, of course)?

to hell. via highway.
I'm just trying to self-actualize. where that takes me I don't know yet. the fun is in the journey.
