Traktor only plays backing track... WTF?!

Post by Huj » Fri Feb 01, 2013 8:40 pm

Ok so I got a new speaker to DJ with (JBL Eon 515xt) yes, just one. I can't afford two yet. So I got a cable that has two 1/4" jacks on one end, and one 1/4" jack on the other end. I plugged both 1/4" connectors into the L and R outputs on my Traktor S2 Controller, and the single 1/4" connector into the first input on the speaker.

Now here's the problem. When I play a deck, i get audio, but... It's only the backing track. I didn't even know that was possible. Like the main vocals don't play, but the ad libs, for example, in a rap play, and the instruments very faintly. It's actually really interesting to see where the artist double layered their vocals haha. But not really useful if I want the whole sound to DJ.

I'm using a new MacBook Pro 15"
The latest version of Traktor

Any help getting the whole mix to play, or just help understanding how this is even possible would be great! Thanks!

Sounds like you're plugging a TRS stereo jack into a mono input and the combined L&R signals are cancelling each other out, leaving you with only the panned sounds in the mix, or the 'side' part of the stereo image, while the 'mid' is cancelled out by the centrally panned sounds being sent to the speaker twice in two different phase orientations.

Try changing your Traktor settings to mono if you can, or failing that, unplug the R cable from your controller. It's not ideal, but might work while you save up for a second monitor.

Sorry I know i definitely could've explained that a bit better haha

Some Beatles tracks are mixed funny, with all the vocals on one side. Shit me up when I was listening to something I've listened to many times before but there was no singing

yes! i'm having trouble listening to a lot of beatles songs because of that - not specifically the vocals but the drums being mixed on only one channel really feels weird
