Extracting single sounds from audio

My problem is that i have failed at creating sound in fruity loops after going through dozens of tutorials etc. only to find that making sound is an extremely time consuming action that is very hard to master, moreover the sounds that are available for free download are not extremely usable. And one thing id like to do is extract a vocal from a song or a specific beat or sound from a song in order to make a remix. even using animal sounds would b nice, yet these are also hard to find. i would also like to extract sounds from a video. So in essence i need a gadget that can extract a specific sound from a song, a site that might have a database of extracted sounds and vocal and a tutorial on fruity loops' sytrus that is not a basic introduction, but a tutorial on making the use of it easy that gives pointers and tips on what functions can be used and what which button does - nifty tricks to make the process faster. Has anyone got some answers for me?

There isn't a shortcut to sound design, it's a case of practicing until you get it right.

And one thing id like to do is extract a vocal from a song or a specific beat or sound from a song in order to make a remix.

You can try using phase inversion with Audacity (a free to download program) to extract vocals;



Alternatively, the Melodyne software lets you isolate individual elements.

even using animal sounds would b nice, yet these are also hard to find.

Also, the http://macaulaylibrary.org/ is the largest collection of animal sounds online.

Workflow shortcuts are something you'll figure out for yourself once you've learnt the basics of the above.

curious as to wiether there is a software that u can extract certain sounds from within the sample ?!

for instance the sample its self is a chello but u can stil hear a background reverbed violin behind it , ive tried eq'n it taking out highs sme mids it takes most of the violin out but loses the actualy coulor of the sound ..

Melodyne or something similar + EQ'ing after is your best bet, but in reality no.

There's software called Photosounder that converts sound to image and can be edited in that form.
Really detailed sound isolation is possible but it's not for the faint hearted.

Computer Music did a feature on this, i think its issue cm183 called 'Break Tracks Apart' ,see if you can get it online. Worth a read.

Pardon my ignorance. I ask this solely for educational purposes. How does one go about isolating the vocals from a fully mixed track?

If this tune wasn't technically a remix, then he didn't have the acapella.

It seems impossible that you would be able to completely isolate vocals from the full track without being able to hear traces of the rest of the original tune intruding over your instrumental?

Anyway, you can't. If you have an exact copy of the instrumental you use phase cancellation to do it, but it will most likely end up sounding like shit with a lot of artifacts. If you post process the vocals a bit you can get away with it.

Also, make sure you use the search function and/or google next time, thousands of tutorials and topics about it on the internet.

Same as above, he might have just asked for the stem. Otherwise use the search, there's massive topics on this already... in short you'll never get a perfect vocal.

I find I can get a usable vocal that has some snare and stuff in it. A bit of noise is ok in context. There's software to extract vocals. I use Virtual DJ's "vocal+" but there are plugins. Also try mid/side adjustment and filter/eq.

If there's a particular vocal you want, I could give it a bash?

Google whatever sound/movie or quote followed by .wav. A ton of free sites will come up. For isolating sounds check out melodyne. It is turbo expensive but very worth it if your serious about music.
