why is there no visual EQ or analyzer as rack extensions

Post by Eat Bass » Sat Feb 23, 2013 6:05 am

sometimes i like to use reason to start out or get ideas and be a bit more creative and then depending on whether i actually make it a full tune ill rewire to logic for all the mixing and such. but not having a good visual eq and a analyzer really fucks me. im trying to get shit sounding decent out of reason and i just think the eq sucks and its harder to shape my sounds...

is there a reason why they havent released any of these? im sure it has to be one of the most sought after devices for reason. it honestly fucks me off. they've done so much with reason but yet its lacking some of the most basic devices. and i think many of the original devices need to be revamped. mostly the M class units in particular. mixing in reason kind of sucks after getting used to logic. i like everything else though.

I've started a bunch of topics in the reason user forum as well as seen many created by others about the same thing. It literally boggles my mind with all the RE's they've released since 6.5, but no motion towards an analyzer/EQ

Probably because propellerhead is developing one themselves.

i dont think thats it. the demand is so high for a nice analyzer EQ it would sell in a heart beat. i suspect theres another reason.

i hope they're totally revamping the M class units though because they kind of suck. idk i just cant get the punch out of the comp like i can with logics.

edit: btw i made this topic when i was pretty drunk last night and i was getting angry that i couldn't get shit sounding up to par, but i know if i had logic open it would have been a different story. problem is i like using malstrom and slapping a loop in dr octo rex. idk its just quick, easy, creative, and fun. thats why i love reason. but with mixing its clunky, and tedious.

6.5. and no i like the new reason mixer, but i mean mixing in general like everything from general eq, to compression, etc. and setting up sends in reason can be tedious as fuck. i like it for a lot of other reasons though. for some reason idk reason just sounds a bit flat and with the included devices its harder for me to give things life than it is with logic. logic i can really get things punching quite easily. reason tends to sound thin and i just cant seem to get the kind of results like i can in logic. its ashame because part of me wants to use reason 100% of the time but it'l never happen unless i see some massive changes. like theres plenty of powerful synths and filters and shit now that RE's are in effect. but now id like to see some real useful mixing tools aka total revampage of the m class boys.

Supposedly the SDK for the rack extensions is open, but i've asked about it a few times already, lately i don't even get response, even after filling out the form and signing the secrecy agreement. They should just make it available for download, like the VST SDK, that way more people will develop things, maybe even for free.

Takes a bit more effort to mix in Reason cos it doesn't do a lot of shit for you.
Like Pro Tools.

Still haven't upgraded to 6(.5). Maybe I can get that in next month.

yeah i know but its still very helpful to know where things are peaking and what not...to accommodate accordingly.

yeah that would be cool. there must be a reason why theres no spectrum analyzer though...theres such a high demand for it, it doesnt make sense as a business not to have one.

yeah for sure it does. but im not so sure logic does any of the mixing for me. it just gives me better tools to get a better mix. obviously it can be done in reason but it just doesnt seem to happen as easily. the tools given are just inferior, only speaking for some of the units, not all.

You can actually wire up the BV512 Vocoder to be a spectrum analyser.

Not that you'd probably want to, it doesn't really tell you much in terms of DBs or frequencies.

Agree with this post though, a visual EQ would be most helpful. Sort it out Prop.
Melodic deepness from my mind.

you must be also registered as a business.

but I know it's early days for the rack extension format atm, and they are not accepting every developer.

regarding the lack of a visual EQ or analyzer. from what certain developers on the PUF have said it is not possible in the current version of the SDK. there are still quite a few limitations to what can currently be done in the rack extension format.

it is widely believed that the next version of the rack extension SDK will be able to support more advanced GUIs, but until then there can be no advanced analyzer device can be made for Reason.

I meant like Logic automatically creates auxiliary returns and stuff like that.
Reason obviously has them in the mixer, but I can imagine it's not as clear as in Logic and some other daws.

True, ears are better than eyes. That goes without saying. But having a visual to go along with sometimes helps. That's one of the reasons I like FL's default Parametric EQ 2 - the little visual bit helps me see where certain parts of the mix lack. My ears aren't really tuned for mixing/mastering (I didn't really learn how to until real recently), and I have dodgy headphones.

I dunno, the little things matter, I guess :P

yeah i have that analyzer combi file. its still a bit dodgy though. doesnt register below 75hz and idk just is a pain to use and wire up to every instrument unless used on the master. idk just seems to be a bit of a pain in the arse.
