I work a 9-5 in the field of public health. My day job requires very logical and structured thinking...hardest thing is getting home and shifting my brain into creative-mode to work on a tune :\

That is actually a big part of public health but my job specifically pertains to understanding and analyzing different disease trends within various populations with a focus on oncology. Then I go home and start up Fl Studio and cry.

I.T. FTW!
Working in I.T. is not the worst thing that could happen to you. The culture is usually WAY relaxed, even at some notoriously square businesses like financial services, etc. - plus, most people don't know the difference between a sequencer and a spreadsheet, so as long as they don't see pumping VU meters or you with permanent rockface overbite, they probably won't suspect that you're actually working on music most of the time. Win-win. Oh, and the money's usually very good, and they're often less stringent about college degrees and whatnot, as long as you're competent and learn reasonably quickly.
Case in point: my college major was Art/Crit. Theory (
), I didn't even get a B.A. in that, and yet I'm now a software engineer for a financial services house.

I do tech support for a cable company. Lucky enough to be able to do it from home. Getting paid while I type this actually.
I have two kids, so I am happy to at least have a job where I have medical/dental insurance for my family. In all honesty everybody I know who makes a living on music barely scrape by and none of them have kids. Most semi successful people I know (musically speaking) who have non music jobs have to work part time too. Not many full time jobs will allow someone to skip town for a week to tour the opposite side of the country.

I do security work at nights, come home, spend all the time I can on Ableton, then sleep, get up and go back to work. Repeat.
Before that I was unemployed for a fair while - luckily because I live in Britain that didn't hold back my production - because I still had a decent money coming in because my GF was unemployed too (decent pulled JSA/Dole) I could still produce when I had time (not looking for a job etc.).

I clean airplanes from 9pm to 7am Fri-Sun. Pays good and is pretty easy but has screwed my sleeping schedule.
Besides that I give drum lessons every now and then and I do random recording projects with friends.
