Re: Getting out of that dubstep mentality.
I dont even get how you could be into a dubstep mentality all the time. What does that even mean?
Re: Getting out of that dubstep mentality.
The sad truth is there are more producers than creative people and if some people don't have a "paint by numbers" way of going about things they have zero clue what to do. I think a lot of producers have never written a song despite finishing many arrangements of sound. They are baking a cake from a box of cake mix.twilitez wrote:I dont even get how you could be into a dubstep mentality all the time. What does that even mean?

^well put. ((Additionally I have seen whole cubase dubstep projects for sale, which isnt helping the paint by numbers people at all))
As that ill.gates guy said all you need is a pencil, paper and eraser (i think) ..
((@alphacat:: yea fair point.. wont help to escape the dubstep mentality as it will always be on the back of your thoughts, when i do this i never know what kind of remix genre i will be doing till the song is finished)
I am assuming the OP is fairly young? is this correct? (dont want to sound insulting) ,,, as time has allowed me to see different genres come and go from the limelight and thus when i sit down to write (as wub said) im more focused on the material in front of me then a genra (be it a vocal or a bass sound) , then i go about choosing a bpm and even that doesn't dictate the beat structure. (i think i want to do a dnb track but i find dubstep drums work better and then a house style pattern seems to work, making some kind of drumstep thingy .... ((inb4 subgenras are gash,. but you know what i mean))

Re: Getting out of that dubstep mentality.
I also think high levels of computer literacy are more common and navigating a DAW doesn't seem difficult to many people. But that doesn't make them creative. The simple truth of the matter is, with he incredibly high number of people out there bedroom producing these days how many of those people are even good enough to be hobby producers? Because lets be honest, it'd be unusual for someone to bang away at something for years and flat out sucking at it the whole time--that's no fun.
I don't intended this to turn into a democratization of music thing, nor is this next statement directed at the OP, but honestly feel like some people should just kindly fuck off. Like the guy that just posted about not getting better or learning anything after producing for 3-4 years. (got moved to writers block thread).
Honestly, if you are so uncreative can't make something with cool with your Legos w/o an instruction book, go away and let the rest of us play with them. This is not intended to be insulting at all. It's been clearly established by academia that there are different kinds of intelligences. I will never be able to fix my car, build a tool shed or solve a calculus equation for example.
I feel like 50% of all bedroom producers--no matter the genre at all...I'm talking from BoC and Burial wannabes to Skrillex and Deadmau5 wannabes--can only do what they do because they've mimicked tutorials.

Re: Getting out of that dubstep mentality.
It means that out of either habit or choice, the OP has produced probably nothing but 140ish sub driven 2step beats for a long time, with no experience or knowledge about the subtleties behind other genres as he has never tried to imitate them in any way or form, making it difficult for him to produce a track of comparable quality in another genre as he can in dubstep.twilitez wrote:I dont even get how you could be into a dubstep mentality all the time. And I don't see what the comment about creativity has to do with this thread. Finding it difficult to produce in other genres doesn't necessarily mean you are uncreative, it means you need to step back and analyse things a little. Every genre of music has it's own taste and if you approach a house tune from a dubstep mentality you will end up making a house tune that sounds like a dubstep track. You might end up with a cool sounding tune, but it won't have achieved your goal of making something completely different.

IMO a creative person or a musically inclined person or a driven person wouldn't be arsed to come of forum and derp about how they can't do anything but make dubstep because they would be busy doing the obvious. The entire premise of the post is asinine. I honestly and simply cannot in anyway imagine sitting down and not being able to force myself to write a house beat instead of a dubstep beat. All you need to do is listen and replicate. If you have to come on a forum to figure that out, god have mercy on your lack of soul. Yep, said it, don't give any fucks what people think.
What did the "I need my hand held through everything" people do before the internet? They quit because they don't have the moxie.

Re: Getting out of that dubstep mentality.
Yo man even the most "musically inclined" person can get blocked. I'd rather try to help that person diversify and reach what they wanna do then castigate them.
If you come at a house beat from a dubstep mentality, as stated, you won't make a house beat. You need to come at it from a house mentality if you're going to get it "right". Or at least except and cherish the "dubstep influences" you're bringing to it.
If you're one of the gifted few who have diversified themselves in music to the point that they can put their mind to any genre they want, props to you. But some people for whatever reason are either not as broad as you, or have only attempted one genre so far and have grown accustomed to it. I myself would struggle to make glitch-hop or electro swing, not because I'm musically retarded, but because I have no experience in it and would need a lot of practice to get it sounding good.
That's what forums are for. If it was pre-internet days, people would have asked each other face-to-face on the best way to approach something from a different angle. Forums are a good way to ask people though because you get a much larger audience who can bring a much more diverse set of opinions to the topic.
Tbf there's plenty of good advice on this thread so far, I'm finding it useful and interesting reading through it so I presume a lot of other people feel the same

Have a search for some house construction kits then swap bits out with your own sounds
