Specific details on the glitchy context reese please! Or are the ones above it for that? I want more info, it's so hollow I like it!PhotonOfficial wrote:I'm not sure specifically which growl you are talking about but a little extra automation I use to get that sound is the amount of FM going from one operator to another so in a basic FM8 setup, the amount of E going into F. If you automate this parameter so that some notes have a lot of FM and some don't, it kind of sounds like a low pass filter sort of thing, just grittier. Also, sometimes if I re-sample I will pitch shift it one semitone down for some lower vowels.IamDroid wrote:In your example. How are you getting that dungeon/darkstep/deathstep style sound to the growls? I can hear a lot of reverb in the growls themselves. But what other FX's did you add to make it sound so mysterious and "Dark" ?PhotonOfficial wrote:
Pick any sound as a base sound, it doesn't matter too much you will just get different results. A notch at around 700Hz for nice colouring with a peak at around 1kHz and another at around 200Hz. While doing a pitch bend, sweep the first peak from 200Hz up to about 800Hz and back (Or less depending on the vowel). The second peak at 1kHz should move very very very slightly for different vowels and does not necessarily have to follow the same pattern as the first peak (I usually alter the second peak at the end of a note). I have been using either Ohmicide or Izotope Trash for the distortion but the distortion surprisingly doesn't matter too much (The amount of FM going on usually gives a nice effect anyways) and adding some gentle saturation. I also usually program my Sub separately.

Sounds really good considering theres no plugins on it! How'd you make it

Well there are plugins but only the FL Studio ones.dotcurrency wrote:Sounds really good considering theres no plugins on it! How'd you make it
I used sytrus.
Well, I dunno why did I post it. It sounds shitty, I've done better.

I know this is justa Growl Bass thread, but can you help me? trying to get that wobble that sounds before the first growl.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Has anyone found a key/note that they find difficult to make a growl for? I'm doing a remix of a track in A# and i'm having a hard time making a good growl for it. One octave sounds too high and thin, and the one below it is way too low and just sounds muddy. I've made a couple halfway decent ones around D,E, and F, but A# is giving me trouble
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Okay, so after hearing a lot of talk about granulizers I finally decided to try one out for myself and, well, while I have no idea what I'm doing it does sound pretty cool.

Massive, bandreject filter, wavetable modulation (WT-pos and intensity), pitch and EQ automation, resampled and then ran through Fruity Granulizer while recording and twiddling the knobs.

Nice sounds man, perhaps pitch up a little, sounds like there's a little too much heavy bass vs. midrange at some parts - but it sounds awesome overallMaxxan wrote:Okay, so after hearing a lot of talk about granulizers I finally decided to try one out for myself and, well, while I have no idea what I'm doing it does sound pretty cool.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
just a thought, what about using sound generators to give more depth to a bass, and integrating it into a group with your main bass sound to give it a oneness? Using such as metaphysical function in reaktor, but of course it would take some getting used to and expertise in the generator maybe?
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Thanks man. Yeah I usually have trouble finding that balance, I find that a lot of the growls these days are a bit too squelchy or whatever but I struggle with having a clear and punchy midrange while not loosing power in the bass. Went back and revised a little though, it's turning out a bit better. BTW, if anyone knows a good read on exactly how a granulizer works that'd be great, right now I'm just turning knobs at random. I feel that if you could master a granulizer you could probably come up with some next level stuff.mthrfnk wrote: Nice sounds man, perhaps pitch up a little, sounds like there's a little too much heavy bass vs. midrange at some parts - but it sounds awesome overall

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
i don't like relying on eq automation too much for making vowel-ish growls, it sounds like someone slapped on WOW filter on 100% wet.
growls are easier made using the right waveforms, morphing through them + distortion/FM. iv been working on a synth for years with this idea in mind (you draw your own waveforms and morph through 4x4 (16) drawn waveforms on a single oscillator using an XY pad/knobs)
i prefer this method over wavetables as traveling in two directions give more flexibility. really hoping to put it out asap since its kinda near completion.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Really depends on how you automate it. Sounds like you've just made some narrow peaks and automated them between freqs, which even in theory is gonna sound like wow filter on 100% wet and with a high resonance.sunny_b_uk wrote:i don't like relying on eq automation too much for making vowel-ish growls, it sounds like someone slapped on WOW filter on 100% wet.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
not really i don't use EQ automation like that at all, i automate the gain (and Q if needed) as well since i tend to do things in fine detail.blinkesko wrote:Really depends on how you automate it. i was sayin i wouldn't rely on it too much since i feel growl basses in general need a more advanced timbre change as the sound progresses to be more appealing. IMO choosing the right waveforms usually results in a cleaner sound and can give really defined vowels if done right. im just saying iv seen plenty people on youtube do big +18db gains with EQ automation without automating much else when it shouldn't be like that.
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Well, yes and no. I would never automate only the EQ, usually that's the last thing I'll automate but I disagree with it sounding like WOW filter, on the contrary I find that proper EQ automation can really thicken a growl. But yeah, definately start off with some wavetable/PWM/whatever automation first.sunny_b_uk wrote:not really i don't use EQ automation like that at all, i automate the gain (and Q if needed) as well since i tend to do things in fine detail.blinkesko wrote:Really depends on how you automate it.
