Automating in Massive

Post by MG3E » Sun Mar 03, 2013 6:18 am

Hey guys I was just wondering what are some common parameters you guys automate in Massive to make your basslines more interesting?

I one time made a synth for an arpeggio, and I had a filter and the oscillator's amp mapped to the same envelope. It was pretty cool.

Mainly filters (use multiple LFO/Envelope on same one to make more interesting sounds)

But also:- Phase (In modulation OSC section) WT-position & Pitch cutoff (in unisono spread) are common ones I like to modulate

Try combining envelopes and lfos on filters, automating from one filter to another, unison spread, osc volume, wavetables, lfo amounts, lfo shapes, bring in fx, legato time etc

I find its worth pretty much modulating loads of things in massive. In my experience, almost any sound you make in massive can be made interesting if modulated correctly. Just experiment and try not to do the same thing as everyone else is doing (lfo on lp filter). I have a few certain parameters I like to get moving that I use a lot now that I never would have thought of doing untill I sat experimenting!

Hope this helps! :)

Great question and thread for a beginner (in this style of music)...

As such, are there any videos of showing this being done or the actual application process (specifically in Logic) that anyone knows about?

Thanks!

Almost every parameter on Massive allows modulation, the idea is to try different things and see what sounds good. There's such a wide range of possibilities, so not a lot of point in listing parameters to try!

you should mess around with everything, stop asking people how they do theirs and just do what ever feels and sounds right. you are never going to find a unique sound by doing only what others have done

Aside from 'what' people are automating/modulating, etc.... are there any good videos that show 'how' you go about modulating/automating parameters (specifically in Logic)? I know how to automate in general but I was hoping to see this process being done in this style of music. In other words, to see a few examples of how it affects the sound as they automate a few parameters.

Thanks!

So many answers to this... depends on what kind of sound you want your synth to make. Automating the filter gives more drastic timbre changes while automating the volume doesn't. I commonly automate the filter cutoff, LFO rate, distortion FX, etc...
