someone please help with this mastering problem.

Post by srankoin » Sun Mar 10, 2013 12:43 am

im currently in the process of finishing my entry for getters fallout remix contest. i wanted to post a preview to soundcloud last night, but when i got the finished wav my wobbles literally sounded like shit...... after bouncing it my wobbles disentagrated and have no similiarity whatsoever to my originals in ableton. Basically in the program everything sounds awesome but the final wav file sounds like crap. ive had this problem before when i started producing when i wouldnt saturate/phase/flange etc but i really cant figure out the problem now. someone please help because the contest closes in 3 days. thanks :)

What FX do you have on the "wobble" channel and the master channel?

Check any automation and volume levels also, might be something small you're overlooking?

on my wobble channel i got a lot man. . eq/compressor/flanger/phaser/reverb/saturator/sausage fattener/chorus/freq shifter/vocoder/amp and like 6 filters and wow filter. and i have a return rack with like 10 different overdrives feeding a little bit into the channel. on my master just compressor/izotope/and a limiter. nobody has experienced this change in sound before? when i started making dubstep i would only get this sound say if i just used massive and no effects. maybe also could it be ive got too much on the bus? thanks for the reply. i appreciate it so much

Its probably clipping really hard somewhere and when it has to be bounced it shits itself, easy way to tell is to render as a 32bit float and in a audio editor goto normalise and it should tell you how much over 0db your track is - bring down the faders in your daw so that its less than 0db when you render.

Yeh with all that shit on your channels that could be true.

Also why the hell are you using so many fx lmao seems a bit overkill.

It could be what the other guys said but are you sure its not an issue of... Hmmm, hard to explain.

Sometimes when you just keep playing your various parts of the track they will sound different to how they would if you played it from start to finish? This happens a lot and bouncing to audio maybe be an option for this problem. Certain FX can do this to sounds sometimes.

I'm not sure it this helps lol but yea it might not even be this :D

Try to bounce out just your basses or wobbles. See if it still sounds bad when bounced. If it sounds good, then bounce out the rest of your track in one file (leaving headroom for basses) then take the two bounced wavs and mix them together in a new project. If it still sounds bad, then simply it is the sounds your using. Re start with the basses. If it sounds fine, in the future instead of packing 100 plugins on your main project, resample! Put one or two plugins on with low gain/drywet. Then bounce out your basses. Drag the new bounce back in and repeat, till you use your 100 plugins or you get your sound. Resampling is best when you need a lot of plugins. You can better control gain and distortion, while keeping CPU to a minimum. You should also look into frequency splitting and Eqing them into your track.

Also to state the obvious ... What are your output settings? Make sure all your plugins are set to work and render at high quality as well as your final render output settings.

If none if this helps, don't be discouraged. Even the pros have to bail on one or two tracks. Just save it and come back to it in a few months when you have gained more knowledge and skill.

What he said. Also you can have the sounds clipping the input of fx in the chain, eg. running it into the the distortion is adding heaps of volume so when it feeds into the filter it is clipping on input but on the way out of the filter it is quiet again cos its been filtered. Look up gainstaging if you can be fucked sometime lol.
