I can't stop moving up the bpm of half-finished tracks and moving them to 160.. Everything just sounds more free and groovy up there...
Give me some tips to enjoy 140ish again? It just feels sluggish and drawn out, nothing ever feels right there any more!

I think you've found your answer. 140's been worn down a bit. Personally I've been feeling the freedom and groove way down...120 and belowlegend4ry wrote:I can't stop moving up the bpm of half-finished tracks and moving them to 160.. Everything just sounds more free and groovy up there...

I like 140 bpm for more rigid grooves, 160/80 sounds amazing for groovy unquatized stuff, 100~110 sounds way too fast, 120~130 sounds way too low.

I love how excruciating 120ish can feel though. You can play with the listener...switch in out of plodding and sparse to full, comparatively fast sounding beat. Playing around with half and double time. Do dubstep drums at 120 and sped up breakbeat. Can sound uncomfortable and dissociated.

Re: Onesixtia
Be a man, use 250 BPM
Re: Onesixtia
Try using 145bpm it adds more movement. I have really enjoyed using 128bpm recently.
Re: Onesixtia
I like 160 more aswell, listened to way too much 140 stuff

i'm addicted to 4/4 stuff pitched up to 160, like the more straight gehtto house stuff dj rashad does
i also LOVE pitching down dubstep to about 110, it's the shit. in fact i love it so much i'm not sure if i should post this here because some motherfucker is gonna take this idea and ruin it i swear

Re: Onesixtia
My favorite ATM is 147. Its got this great bouncy feel to it, honestly i have the same problem.
Ill work the track at 138-144, generally 140.
A lot of times ill push it up to 147 and think in my head that the groove is a lot better.
Depends on the style you make i guess, for me 144-147 just works.

Re: Onesixtia
Try 4x4 kicks, breaks, or something constantly on the "&" of a beat. Like if you do 1 2 3 4 kick on 1 and snare on 3, put an open hi hat or tambourine or something on the &'s. 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &. Or snares on 2 and 4. or snares on 1,2,3,and 4. or something going constantly on 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a like metal drummers do kick drums or 808 hats in southern hiphop. or blast beats. do blast beats please.legend4ry wrote:Give me some tips to enjoy 140ish again? Re: Onesixtia
I've lately been working on a few remixes, one at normal 140, another at 143, and another at 174. I personally enjoy about 150 for heavy dubstep, 112, for a lot more melodic dubstep, 86 for more smooth detuned stuff to just let stuff breathe, and 172 for anything with a lot of swing/groove. So, basically 150, 112, 86, and 172 are my main points.

Re: Onesixtia
Nothing to be sad about really. If you've made a lot of stuff at 140, of course it's going to get old. What's sad is that you came up with the term Onesixtia.
Onesixtia: A portmanteau of 160bpm and mania. A condition characterized by obsession with a single new tempo and abandoning a hackneyed tempo whilst maintaining rigid, inherently boring tempo conventions of electronic music.
Jokes aside, maybe you could try using metric modulation to incorporate notes at around 160 into 140?
Maybe try loops at 160bpm playing in your daw with the project tempo at 140 and see how they fit, rhythm-wise. Like if they are triplets, quintuplets, 5, 7, or 13 notes against 4 quarter notes at 140.
I'll probably try this tomorrow if I have time. I think it's kinda out there as a suggestion, but it just might work.
