I don't like the fact that months go by, I simply didn't care any more and left the theatre after that, I walked out the instant I saw the fire-drawing he made on the bridge. Pacing conflicts everywhere if you ask me. Fast - SLOW - ANNOYINGLY SLOW - TIMEWARP : I need some consistency.

WHY IS SO MUCH SCI-FI SO HORRENDOUSLY CAMP??

Like Dune, fucking sick concept ruined by awful flowery words and am almost chilidish perception of good vs evil. Then on the other end of the scale you got someone like Kim Stanley Robinson, where it's just PAGES of details about rock formations and such like, with absolute zero character depth or intrigue.

Richard Morgan and Asimov are stellar, aside from them...

The Avengers helicarrier is an integral part of Marvel lore. I don't recall it ever having submarine capabilities though.

One of my favourite scifi writers, Revelation space and Chasm city are class.

Other good un-cheesy writers that havent been mentioned yet; William Gibson,Iain M Banks, Strugatsky brothers, China meville (if he counts as scifi).

Yeah, I think China mieville usually gets classed as fantasy. Not heard of the strugatsky brothers, might have to look them up. Didn't include William Gibson solely for the reason I've managed to not read any of his books so far.

Oh a few other worthy mentions: Orson Scott Card, Larry Niven, Joe Haldeman.

If you havent read any Gibson I'd recommend starting with the bridge trilogy - virtual light, idoru & all tomorrows parties - Idoru is his best imo. The book series involving Neuromancer is more famous because it predicted loads of technology but comes across a bit dated now.
The strugatsky brothers wrote Roadside Picnic - in which aliens visiting earth dumped a load of rubbish before they left, unwittingly creating chernobyl type areas into which people called stalkers sneak in to sift through it for things to sell.

you're better off just watching stalker by tarkovsky instead. It is one of those rare instances where the film is miles better than the short novel.

Nah disagree with you there man, as I mentioned in the snh movie thread, the film is completely different to the book; it approached the story in a totally opposite way by more of less removing the scifi element and making it more of a psychological drama, where the whole zone is possibly just a figment of a crazy guys imagination. While its still good, its very different to the book which I prefer.

District 9 meets Vanquish meets Appleseed meets Xbox360 first person shooter meets Matt Damon.

Anyone looking forward to the new Star Trek movie? I'm curious and somewhat enthused tbh. I'm a die hard TNG fan but I still think they didn't miss with the last one and creating a brand new timeline is kind of cool..

I can't see that trailer for the amount of lens flares.

First one sucked ass. Time travel plot did not work at all. Plus the guy who plays Kirk sucks.

This one might be a bit better though.

I avoid trailers like the plague. But I'm really looking forward to this. Loved the last one. The time travel plot actually made sense for once.

exactly how unlikely was it that Scotty would be on that one base on that one moon…where old spock also resides.

Also, wasn't time travelling Extensively covered in Star Trek? Wasn't there some police force that prevented time travel and altering of the future?

As a stand-alone it could have worked...And the special effects were good (and that brings us back to prometheus LOL)
