im not saying i necessarily agree with the different connotations (tbh it doesnt affect me in any way personally because i've never felt "white pride" or wanted to), but imo it obviously comes from the fact that one has a history of adversity and minority status in most of the western world. i dont like generalizing, but i think its generally fair to say that black people have had more struggles to overcome in their history and that white people have had it relatively easy. so in that sense it sort of makes sense to say "hey, i'm proud that my ancestors and myself have largely defeated injustices put against us".

just imagine "poor pride" vs "rich pride" (and let's say you're born either poor or rich, so that's ignoring someone who was born poor and climbed the ladder of prosperity, for example)... same scenario imo. having "poor pride" is more defensible because youre not afraid to say that you face some adversity and struggles, while you just sound like a tnuc if you have "rich pride" because you're privileged and have it easy in a relative sense

good question... i think it has some merits, such as a sense of solidarity among people, but for the most part i think it's harmful because it just creates arbitrary barriers between people. ultimately i think it divides people rather than bringing us ALL together

i think culture is something distinctly different from race. your exposure to different cultures is obviously dictated by where/what youre born into, but growing up you have a choice to embrace or reject that culture. there's a choice there, and i think it's fine and well to be proud of a conscious decision you've made, as opposed to something that's entirely out of your control.

i know race does not equal culture, but i think we cant joke ourselves that they dont go hand in hand for a lot of people.

people are welcome to feel proud about their roots,culture,traditions etc but often when it comes to skin colour, people are comparing it (either directly or indeirectly) to the actions of the 'opposite' skin colour it seems. I guess everyone has a different definition and understanding of blackness and whiteness. Didn't we all emerge from Africa anyway?

Tribalism has always existed though and it still does today whether in actual tribles or cities of the 1st world. Things like nationalism are weird too, but patriotism is even weirder. Again, no problem with being proud about your country's traditions, just as long as it isn't the tainted byproduct of 50 years of them newspaper rags.

One thing i would like to see is Human Pride. Cos that's something we seem to be lacking in as a whole. Red blood pride. Planet earth pride.

I think the word "Pride" is misplaced a lot of the time.

When certain areas of society are treated as underclasses then "pride" can be a powerful concept because it shows that not everyone sees disadvantages as actual disadvantages. Being "proud" of something that society turns its nose up to (race, sexuality, gender, disability, nationality, whatever) reminds a society that its judgements are subjective. Pride is the wrong term to use - it's more about acknowledging a lack of stigma - it's not saying "I'm black, I'm better than you" it's saying "I'm black and there's nothing fucking WRONG WITH THAT".

If you're NOT a put-upon section of society, "Pride" can take on exactly the opposite connotations. What function does a show of pride have for those that are already society's vision of "status quo"? Only to raise that status quo to a de-facto "correct" - "white" pride encourages society to turn those subjective prejudices into objective ones... to believe that whites aren't just equal, as society tells us every day, that they're actually "better" than others and deserve special treatment. That they're entitled to a happy life before anyone else should be afforded one.

People muddle it up on both sides though - hang out on the Okayplayer boards for long enough and it'll seem clear that "Black Pride" in 2013 is gaining a few similarities to "White Pride".
