The Big Bang

Continuing the Sam Rockwell theme, gave this another watch. Antonio Banderas is a private investigator hired to investigate a missing person who may or may not have existed. Sam Rockwell is an eccentric billionaire with a particle accelerator. Lots of musings on the state on the universe and a shit ton of physics references (like the diner is called Planck's Constant Cafe)
shame they let a 5 year old design the poster

Probably was the best part of his day though.

It seemed like whoever made it had a good idea and then just made a film without any thought of how to adapt the idea into a decent story. The characters don't actually engage in dialogue, they talk as if they're a walking blog post or something, it just felt as if it was the writer delivering his "oh, i'm so unique" perspective through two paper thin constructs who blather on endlessly about how much better stuff was in the old days (that Alice Cooper scene made me cringe so much) and shoot people (hahahahhaha!).

but yeah glad you guys enjoyed it, just felt the need to rant about that film lol.
it was terrible

Slacker
Image

It's not really about anything so it's a bit hard for me to give it a mark. It just follows various (mainly) twenty-somethings around, one after the other, as their lives meet for the briefest of moments.
Different subjects are touched on with each person we visit from the spanish civil war to oblique strategies, and relationships to Madonna's pap smear.

Bit weird but it reminds me of what conversations were like before the internet was widely available.

I'll give it an arbitrary 6.5/10

^ Does someone get hit by a car near the beginning of that film? I think I watched it on youtube a few years ago. I do remember it having a strange vibe to it, but only because it doesn't follow a conventional structure I suppose. Might watch it again.

Yeah, some guy runs him mum over.

It's hard to say if I liked it or not... I'm not pissed I watched it and i'm not indifferent... That's about as positive as I can be.
It was interesting enough to keep my attention, i'll leave it at that.

Edit - I just read the top of the poster and "Shrewdly hilarious" and "outrageous" are not words i'd use... 'Quirky' and 'niche' seem more appropriate.

Watched it because I thought sightseers from the same director was great. Enjoyed how everything was done in such ordinary scenery but had mental actions. Gonna watch Kill list next!

I Also watched King of Kong on your lots recommendation wasnt sure how I woud feel about it but somehow it manages to get you into it. I've never wanted someone win at a video game so much before in my life haha :4:

Finally got round to seeing Samsara.

Highly recommended. mixture of transcendental beauty and the stark reality of the human condition that resides within it. Very beautiful intro and then it get's more condensesd and city/industry/human behaviour focused but ends on as good a note as you could expect.

The Master

I think this isn't Anderson's best moivie (There Will be Blood: masterpiece for several reasons, Boogie Nights: a good film). I think the basic story (a troubled man seeking a new family, obviously his first family was corrupted (tsecni...) and his army family was constructed on a poor premise) works very well. But I think the movie is too technical and it really is a film maker's movie (like 7 Psychopaths). Acting (and techniques of acting, like method acting which they are actually doing in the film on several occasions in the form of the therapy sessions) is very important and approached in a technical manner: I'd say it is almost a study on acting (the acting is good btw).

It simply wasn't as engaging and it simply wasn't as broad and wide as There Will Be Blood. It confirms that Anderson is a good director and if you like his oeuvre you should deffo watch it. But just as Martin McDonagh in In Bruges displays his full set of skills and goes all out (whereas in 7 Psychopaths, focusses on particular technical aspects), you're probably better off with Boogie Nights and most certainly There Will Be Blood. Or Magnolia (jeesh almost forgot that one!).

Magic Mike

Similarities with Boogie Nights but without the soundtrack. Enjoyable, McConaughey is on point.

Primer. I found it really difficult to follow, it's like listening in to a confusing technical conversation.
