actually fuck it, go buy yourself 5k worth of studio equipment, give me 10k, and read all that and teach yourself in way less time.

Re: Moving To L.A, Cali for ICON Collective Production Schoo
Over the past 6 years I've spent about 15k on cigarettes...
Re: Moving To L.A, Cali for ICON Collective Production Schoo
so much butthurt in this thread.. if i were OP i would of rather dumped that $15k on prod equipment and lock myself in a room but to each their own. if OP has the money to blow let him. anyways hope u have fun there and learn some shit in the process
Re: Moving To L.A, Cali for ICON Collective Production Schoo
if im "butthurt" about anything it's the overuse of that term.... why shouldn't any one of us weigh in on what we think of such a program, on a forum based around topical threads and individuals' opinions and thoughts regarding the OP....
I think these schools are predatory profit mills, and OP would do themselves a favor by spending their money elsewhere. As everything that goes on in those classrooms can be had for free by reading macc's thread, the production bible, the ever growing wealth of information bubbling out of this forum and others, youtube, and hanging around other amateur/pro/somewhere-in-between music producers rather than people with jobs at music production teaching institutions
It's more trying to be a good neighbor than getting butthurt. Those schools are not going to get you any leg up on industry jobs, whether you wanna be a mix engineer, beat maker, songwriter, DJ, performer or producer. The only thing that moves you forward in any of those fields is by doing it and doing it and doing it. The money is so obviously better off spent on gear.

Re: Moving To L.A, Cali for ICON Collective Production Schoo
A degree/certificate doesn't mean anything in the music business. It's all about who you know.
I'd love to see some of these students' work though. I want to see how much they really learned.

hate to be a dick and agree with everyone, but i went to an audio school like this, "the center for arts and technology" (the same school excision and datsik went to)
and they talked about all this shit i would be learning then i ended up learning more of youtube ahahha.not saying they cant teach you anything, but probably the bare essentials, i would say fuck the schooling open up your DAW and pick a synth and stay there lol just my thoughts

Icon has a lot of great staff and a nice location. You can test out of classes you don't need; You don't take the class, you don't pay for it.

$15k is a lot for networking, but TBH if you're sure about it and have the cash, then why not.daeMTHAFKNkim wrote:I think a Music Production certification? Sad that idk. You'd do well to have your production at a standout level before joining though IMO, so you can be networking with some standout demo tracks from the getgo...like saying, "I'm at this level now, so I can only improve being here". Plus you'll have first hand chance to get your demo into the hands of people face-to-face that you'd never normally have access to.

So, it's been a few months now that you've been at the school.
Can you PLEASE give us an update to how the experience has been there? School, what you've learned, what you've made, life in LA, etc?
Also, it'd be great if you could give us an explanation of how you made it work logistically. Did you just graduate from school with extra money? Did you quit your job? Personally, I just graduated from college, but I still need a job, so I'm curious.

Re: Moving To L.A, Cali for ICON Collective Production Schoo
like. im doing music tech and audio systems, but i went to a uni that is well known (within its subject) for doing it well. + I only had to move to huddersfield. its helped a lot already and this was just the first year. im not doing it to be the next super rad broducer tho, i want to work in the sort of audio technology area. i already have a job fixing hearing aids which is pretty interesting and that came about through the fact that i do MTAS. I dunno, i hope you learn a lot but i have heard that these places are not great because the teachers are generally washed up crappy 80s bassists.

Actually I'm waiting for the next generation of washed up Massive mouse jockeys.
Re: Moving To L.A, Cali for ICON Collective Production Schoo
FWIW, I went to graduate school to be a writer...the two things I got were connections and time to write while the Uni paid my tuition and gave me a stipend to live on. The course work was bullshit and the faculty were the literary equivalent of washed up, shitty 80's bassists in Hawaiian shirts with pony tails.
I should have gone and had an adventure so I had something to write about. Now I teach essay writing to fucking retard freshmen at a crappy state Uni.
